    Effective whitespot treatment

Raising the temperature that high is going to be pretty hard on the plants and any livestock. I've had good results with Protozin in planted tanks, doesn't seem to do any harm and very effective at clearing whitespot.

    Green Neon Tetra fakes death

No idea if it's truly an adaptive response but I quite often see this behaviour when catching neons in the shop - they'll bob about like gonners for a few moments in the bag before righting themselves and continuing as normal. Sent from my Lenovo K50-t5 using Tapatalk

I'd go with male, but to be honest I seem to get these wrong as often as I'm right.

    Parasphaerichthys ocellatus - Eyespot Gourami

More like licorice gouramis I think Troi - very quiet and retiring fish by all accounts. Haven't kept them myself but have seen them a couple of times and they struck me as pretty timid. Lovely little fish but they'll want a nice subdued tank and lots of cover.

    How many ottos/ amano shrimp?

My otos are pretty keen on the spirulina crumb from TA Aquaculture but will happily take anything they can find. Some nice slimey veg often goes down a treat.
  10. BigTom

    How many ottos/ amano shrimp?

Yeah it's a good idea to expect to have to supplement the diet of both otos and Amanos anyway, so really it comes down to personal preference. I'd definitely go for at least 10 of each.

Little fish - really teeny tiny, iclke munchkin fellas

Just about I reckon James. They're a bit funny in that they spend a lot of time loafing about not doing much, but when they get moving they'll cover 2 or 3 feet in about a second. Give them plenty of plants to rootle about in and they should keep themselves occupied though. The other reason I...

Little fish - really teeny tiny, iclke munchkin fellas

Yeah it's a possibility. Haven't read enough Badis/Dario breeding reports to see if anyone has noticed a temperature effect on sex determination. I wonder if they're still definitely all wild caught or if someone is breeding them out east. A more worrying alternative would be pollution induced...

Little fish - really teeny tiny, iclke munchkin fellas

Finding females is really hard. My LFS just had 100 delivered - all male. Had a chat with Colin Dunlop about this a while ago and he's had batches of very young fish that are pretty much unsexable as far as he's concerned and they've still turned out to be 99% male. Springtails as live food for fish

Nope I've never bred any. Worth a shot though I reckon, I can't imagine there'd be vast differences between wild ones and whatever the preferred type is for cultures. Could be wrong though!
  19. BigTom

Springtails as live food for fish

Look under any rock or branch at this time of year and you should find plenty. They're pretty much the most numerous macroscopic animal order on the planet iirc.

    Parosphromenus (gold dust)

Maidenhead Aquatics occasionally have some in stock (sometimes even with the right species name!). Shoaling fish in hard water

Having said all that, females are often hard to find and not at all colourful anyway and I don't know if you'd get the same problems in a male-only setup.

    Shoaling fish in hard water

Sawbwa are lovely fish, but are schooling rather than shoaling. Depends how tight you want them to be. Males are also highly combatative in my experience, at least in the presence of breeding females. I'm down to 2 adult males from my original 6. I thought I was losing them to old age, but...

  34. BigTom

    Baby Otocinclus!!

Lovely. As long as the tank is reasonably mature with a bit of biofilm I'd guess feeding shouldn't be an issue. I think predation is likely to be the major problem if there's anything else in the tank.

    Daphnia from the local pond.

    BumbleBee Gobies and shrimp?

Even if your neighbour only popped in and fed them some live foods once a week they'd OK for a while. The Hyallela aren't terribly pretty, but then you don't see them much; any that break cover during the day promptly get eaten :)
  45. BigTom

    BumbleBee Gobies and shrimp?

You're right in that they will almost certainly only ever take live foods. I've got a group of bumblebees which used to be in a 25 litre nano with some shrimp.... they instantly munched on all the juveniles, and then would gang up and kill the adults when they were vulnerable after moulting...

    Fish for 60x20x20 tank.

They need very soft and clean water, low pH and exclusively live foods. Wonderful fish, but best suited to a species only setup where the focus should be on breeding them (they're increasingly threatened in the wild from habitat destruction). Also, almost all Paros are sold as P. deissneri, but...

    Fish for 60x20x20 tank.

A trio (1M, 2F) or small group of any of the Dario species would probably do well in a tank that size. Finding/correctly sexing females is very difficult though. Elasoma evergladei would be another good shout. If you can provide a good blackwater environment and extremely soft water then...

    Chilli Raspora

They are pretty shy. Once they settle in the males will probably start establishing little territories and showing off to each other and the females, then you'll see them more.
  54. BigTom

    Sparkling Gouramis

Male sparkling gourami can get pretty aggressive when defending a bubble nest, I doubt a female would be able to hide in a tank that small. 19 degrees is getting a bit low as well, although I have had them breed for me at 22 degrees so I don't believe the need to keep them too warm.
  55. BigTom

Slow release/dissolving food blocks any good?

I wouldn't bother with them, horrible messy things. Your fish and shrimp will be fine without food for 5 days.
  56. BigTom

Where can I get Chocolate Gourami's??

Colin Dunlop (The Fish Hut) up here in Scotland has just got back into action after a winter hibernation and had some in his last shipment I believe. Probably gone by now but they'll be on his lists if you can't find them elsewhere (he posts).

Small interesting/unusual fishes - suggestions wanted

I'm jealous, mine won't eat anything that isn't alive... wiggling frozen bloodworm will trick them into taking a bite but they always spit it back out again. They'll take microworm with disdain but go absolutely mad chasing Hyallela and enjoy mosquito larvae and rat-tailed maggots from the pond...
  64. BigTom

    Invisible Otos

Mine were incredibly secretive for at least the first six months. Spent 90% of their time in the dark under the emergent plants. I see them all the time now, whether that's down to them getting used to their surroundings or feeling more secure now that the plants have grown in I couldn't say.

Mine love them :p They're not terribly good hunters though so don't seem to pick too many off, but they certainly try.

Small interesting/unusual fishes - suggestions wanted

I would give puffers twice that space. Used to have 5 in a 90l and thought they were a bit cramped. Keeping them with shrimp and otos is always a gamble as well and seems to depend on individual personalities.

Advice on suitable Cichlids for an aquascaped tank please?

Advice on suitable Cichlids for an aquascaped tank please?

Tank size and water params? Apistogramma, Dicrossus, Kribensis or Pelvicachromis are the obvious shout, but I think keyholes are greatly underrated. Hemichromis are very good lookign fish but a bit trickier due to aggression while breeding. Actually I think hemichromis tend to dig so ignore...

  71. BigTom

White Cloud Minnows for a nano ?

Yeah they're pretty active little fish, I'd want a tank at least 45cm long I think, if not more. Something like Elassoma evergladei or Dario dario or D. hysginon would work well if you can find them (will probably need live foods though), and only 1 male in a tank that size.
  72. BigTom

    Scarlet badis?

  73. BigTom

    Scarlet badis?

Well done finding females! Excellent sex ratio there. Where did you get them from? Get them in a well planted tank with lots of nook and crannies and not too strong a flow. Males will want at least a square foot each to set up territories in. I'd recommend a species only tank, or with other...
