Time to remortgage I think :)

    Grobeam-any good

It depends what type of tank you're planning. If you're looking for a high tech tank then you may need as many as 3 ND1000s and 2-3 500s over a 6 x 2 x 2, maybe even more! You don't "need" the controllers, they are an expensive luxury, super cool though ;) As for used reef ones, I'd suspect...

    Grobeam-any good

I can testify that the aquaray series is perfect for what we are trying to achieve. Anyone who claims that you can't grow particular species' with LED is simply kidding themselves and are not embracing change, for whatever reason. I've grown almost all the usual aquatic species with TMC LEDs...

    So LED's don't work??

I've got an ADA Solar 1 bought from TGM, it looks super swish, I adore it BUUUT - ever since i've owned it I've struggle with Algae. My theory is that there is too much light - not enough CO2 etc so I raised it up, it worked - algae dissapeared  but then my plants went into decline and...

    9w or 20w over 10 liter cube?

Hello Tom, i've not seen you around these parts for a while, good to see you're back! I'd have a go with the 9w, it's pretty much 1w per litre and plenty of people have had success with this nano method, including myself. I do use pressurised CO2 though. If it's not working then PlantedBox are...

    fluval new tank lights

Hi Simon, welcome to UKAPS. What we need to establish is what other avenues have you explored along with lighting. Many people put failing plants down to lack of light, this is rarely the case. Plants need nutrients, light and CO2. Your current lighting will certainly grow plants so... 1) Do...

what t8 is best for growing

My favorite lamp to look at is a mixture of the two Dennerle lamps, Amazon Day and Plant Special. However, since the day i grew plants with a marine blue lamp I would now only buy from Lamp Specs as it's clear that most of the branded "plant" lamps out there are just marketed well and VERY...

Making the transition 't5 to MH'

hmm, well, in theory, as you've raised the lighting the levels are similar to what you had previously. As you lower the light you may need to up the nutrient levels, you will have to up the CO2. A small amount of trial and error will be required but CO2 is key IMO. Your plants will let you know...

Making the transition 't5 to MH'

Quite an obvious one, which you've no doubt already thought of is to double the hight in which you suspend the light above the tank. You're not far off doubling the light intensity with 150w of halide so if you start off twice as high, keep an eye on the CO2 and slowly bring the light closer to...

question regarding T5 lighting over 80 gallon low tech tank.

Re: question regarding T5 lighting over 80 gallon low tech t It sounds fine to me, if they are the lights that you have then just give it a go. If your finding that these are too high energy then just block one off for a while and see how it goes. Each tank is different so the WPG rule...

GRO BEAM 100 ND lighting tile

I've had an 1000 ND on a 30cm nano, it's been running since August and it's still going strong, i don't think it looks too bad either.....
  12. Dan Crawford

Adding extra lighting to aquarium hood.

Jewel hoods, along with most standard hoods are hard to modify, simply because of where the lights are located. I'd stick with what you have, keep your reflectors clean and given proper CO2 and all the game, you should be able to grow whatever you like IMO.

    ADA Solar I

Hi NA Fan and welcome to UKaps! First of all, fair play for going for the ADA light, there really is no true competitor in terms of style. Second of all, i've had two halides in the past and neither "seemed" to push out as much light. Thirdly, it does come with a hanging kit, two cables and a...

    ADA Solar 1

Ah ha, a master and his tools hey. I can see it now - the kids on the floor franticly riffling through the Christmas Argos book getting all sorts of excited, "WOW, look at this, can i have one of these please?" and you doing exactly the same with the ADA catalogue in hand
  15. Dan Crawford

    ADA Solar 1

Oh is that right? I didn't know that dude, where on God's green Earth did you find that out? LOL

Evidently, you get what you pay for i suppose.
  17. Dan Crawford

    ADA Solar 1

Do it do it do it, you won't be disappointed i promise! Even folks who don't appreciate my weird obsession with all things aquatic think it's awesome, most people have commented on the colour rendition of the NA Green tube, more so than the sleek look of the unit it's self! The cost in theory...

    ADA Solar 1

Hi mate, the entire unit is about 350mm long and the lamp is 150w. ADA Solar 1

I'm far from paranoid and I don't presume anyone is out to "get me" James but what do you take from that comment? Nice house Dan - laugh out loud, nice light though - laugh out loud? If that were me laughing at your house i'm sure you'd be a tad touchy....

    ADA Solar 1

At the moment i have the ballast outside the cabinet but i'll be looking to change that, i was so excited to get it hung i thought "i'll do that later" LOL It looks easy enough to do though.
  22. Dan Crawford

    ADA Solar 1

Thanks mate :D The external ballast is cool and the unit is still well heavy without it, I like that though, just like the iPhone and stuff, it "feels" well made. It should match the new setup even better, well excited!
  23. Dan Crawford

  25. Dan Crawford

    ADA Solar 1

I was actually annoyed that it had been packed so well, i couldn't get into it quick enough! Thanks mate, i'm really surprised at how much light it seems to give off, it appears more than the previous light, whether or not this is true i couldn't say but it certainly "seems" to be brighter/lighter.

    ADA Solar 1

Well, I have a new ADA style tank and cabinet being made by Aquariums Ltd in dark grey and i've had a good month so i thought i'd treat myself to something i've been fantasizing about for years, so i gave TGM a call and bought an ADA Solar 1. I'm truly impressed by the whole thing, it's...

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

  38. Dan Crawford

Low light level increase;LEDs vs. T5 luminaires (inc. Hagen

Congrats on your bargain although i'd be careful with that lighting till you have CO2, too much light and not enough CO2 equals ALGAE! I'd run half the lighting if you can, if not, have a short photoperiod, about 5 hours. It'd be a shame to be nailed by algae before you've even really started.
  39. Dan Crawford

    can i grow HC?

Hi folks, the great thing about EI is that you don't NEED to understand it, just trust it. It is of corse better to understand it. If you download and use NutriCalc then you put in your tanks volume and it tells you how much of what to put in, it's simple. I had great results with it, the best...

    Brackets for luminaires

Aquariums Ltd will make you a wicked brace, i have one for our four footer. It's stainless steel box section which runs up one side of the cabinet and tank, over the top then back down the other side. Just screw it to the sides of your cabinet and voila! Suspend your luminaire from said brace :D
  41. Dan Crawford

    Dennerle T5 Tubes

I used to use 2 Amazon Days combined with 2 Special Plants. It was without question the best combination i've ever used. As for whether or not the plants preferred it i don't know, i certainly did though.
  42. Dan Crawford

Fitting a photoperiod round my life!

I can't see why it would hurt to pop them on for an hour first thing, 7am. It's not good practice but it could work, i can't imagine it would cause any damage as such?
  43. Dan Crawford

    Advice Please!

Welcome to UKaps :D Ed is right in saying that EI is easier than you think, i couldn't understand what i was worrying when i finally dove in, and the results are outstanding! I have 2 125w Arcadia MV pendants over my 80cm  and i think they are great, certainly if you can't afford a new...

    lighting duration

As far as i'm aware it's of no advantage to the plants, in fact its a disadvantage IMO I know people used to do it to "stop algae getting a hold" and i know for sure that you needn't worry about that mate

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

Fossilised wood - the greatest piece of hardscape that money can buy i recon. TGM have loads, get down there and grab some before it all goes LOL. And yes, that what's in there lol. The MV's are warm i must say but i don't heat my tank so it's kinda benificial, if i feel it getting a bit hot...
  50. Dan Crawford

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

Thats a lovely idea, i've got a load of red stems in there already or on order so great minds think alike i say  The color of the hardscape will really lend it's self to an autumn theme. You've got me thinking now and i've just cemented the name for the scape, nice one!

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

well up untill yesterday i was accidentally running 10 hrs  on a brand new tank with aquasoil  only had a bit of algae so checked it straight away and i'd set the timers up wrong, doh. I'm gonna run one for 8 hrs and the other for about 5 hrs in the middle, i'll see how it goes...

  54. Dan Crawford

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

Here they are, i really like them, the look of the luminaire it's self and the color of the lamps. I've raised the rear one up a bit so you can see them both. The Arcadia suspension kit is genius!
  55. Dan Crawford

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

Well i've suspended them from the ceiling and they look awesome. The colour is teffific, there is currently one pink and one white bulb in there and i'm more than happy with it, better than the colours from my Dennerle T5's IMO, well cuffed. Anyone want an 80cm arcadia T5 luminaire? :)

    mercury vapor - your thoughts?

Hi all, i've just acquired two Arcadia 3 series 125w mercury vapor pendants and wondered what your thoughts were. I've gotta replace the bulbs and lampspecs have 4100K bulbs but thats it. Dennerle do some too @ 4000. I have a 100w Arcadia 80cm luminaire at the moment and i'm thinking of...

    Open Top Lighting

Arcadia do a 60cm and it's good. I think it's early 100w. EQJ trading on ebay do one too but it's not quite as good, still good though and it's relatively inexpensive.
  61. Dan Crawford

    Changing bulbs?

I'd change mine every 12 months, i still keep the old tubes coz i'm a horder! There is a notable difference between an old one and a new one.

here you go mate http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HAGEN-GLO-T5-LINE ... 18Q2el1247 they are the new Hagen ones but Arcadia is the future IMO. Well worth the wedge, i was lucky enough to get mine for a bargain but i would have happily payed retail.

Upgrading Ligting on Juwel Vision 180

hiya, i had a vision 180 and an 80cm arcadia luminaire in preperation for my new 80cm tank and the luminaire with it's legs all the way out will not fit on the edges of the vision so it would have to be suspended. I'd go for a 90cm luminaire, the tubes in the 80cm are only 55cm long and 100w all...
