    Angelfish with oto's??

I've kept angels in my tank, which is about 10X turnover. At the moment I have discus in this tank, and they're thriving. They don't seem to mind the flow at all.

    feeding discus

thanks everyone! lots of new things to try out! I'm going to give the flake from Plymouth a go, but if they won't take it I'll look into the other frozen options.

    feeding discus

Just did a bit of digging on ebay and you can buy frozen food there! But what if it thaws in the post, which it probably will, is it safe to just re-freeze it?

    feeding discus

What do discus eat? Mine are eating frozen food at the moment, a mixture of stuff like bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp etc... and something called 'discus food' - I don't know what it is but I suspect beef heart and some type of greenery. But guess what? After 30 years trading, my lfs has...

    pets at home "quiz"

Urgh I hate the attitude of the lady who works in our local Pets at Home. She thinks she knows everything there is to know, and talks in a really patronising way. Then she told me that a siamese fighter fish shouldn't live alone and needs to be in a community... I'm not going back there even...

    my discus is sick

all better, I think. I treated them to a course of Myxazin, which wasn't nice for my hairgrass, but has fixed my fish's eye. He's still darker than he used to be though, but is eating very well, looking healthy so I'm not too worried.
  8. H

    my discus is sick

no I didn't quarentine them :-( probably should have but I don't have a spare tank. The temparature is 30 degrees C

    my discus is sick

    thanks that's very reassuring!

    my discus is sick

One of my discus (I have eight in my 100 gal) has gone darker and has a little bit of cloud in his eye. I've never had discus before so I don't know what to do, I got three about 2 months ago, and I got five more this weekend. All the other discus are fine, and all of them are feeding well. I...

    What do your Oto's eat?

I don't feed my otos anything, they seem to find what they need around the tank. It is a big (100gals) established, very well planted tank though. If the others are alright, and the oto is behaving normally, then maybe your oto is a male and that's why he's thin? I find my females a lot...

    Royals, Whips and Diamonds

nice fish :-) I love royal plecs, but does yours not eat your plants? I've never seen plants disappear so fast as when I put a royal plec in my tank!

    white spot

Sorry to hear that Steve :-( I have been away in a stress for a while, so it was wierd to see my topic was still near the top! I haven't had any white spot reoccurance. I would throughly recommend the Esha stuff. Things are going quite well here. Although none of my Krib fry survived, the...

    white spot

Interestingly, the Esha treatment has cured the hair algae problem that I've been fighting since before before Christmas!
  15. H

    white spot

ALL SPOTS GONE!!! and I did that water change, which has helped with the algae.
  16. H

    white spot

Thanks Ed, There is still ONE spot on one of the tetras (there were two yesterday). No other spots to be seen anywhere, and those fish who had clamped fins, have now unclamped them. So I'm getting rid of this one stubborn spot! I will do my water change tommorow morning, then dose. Clean...

    white spot

Does anyone know when I can do a water change? It's been a week now, and I'm getting the usual pre water change algae on the front glass. It's worse than usual, but that might be due to me feeding the fish a bit more this week (I was making sure the fry got enough food, and the other fish...

    white spot

    even better today!
  19. H

    white spot

things are much better today :-) most of the spots have gone now on all the fish, and the seven fry are still ok.
  20. H

    white spot

thanks for explaining that Ed, that makes things make sense and seem less scary! Yes, the temperature has been increased - I'm now maintaining 30 degrees C.
  21. H

    white spot

I found the fry! They're not dead after all, just hiding.
  22. H

    white spot

White spot is much worse today... I put a second treatment in yesterday and I thought I was past the worst. But I was wrong, and it's back worse than before with more fish affected. All the fry have gone :( not a good day.
  23. H

    white spot

Bad news - there are only seven fry left. I put a second dose of the meds in today - I don't know if it killed them, or if they got eaten by something :(
  24. H

    white spot

My clown loach only has two spots now - compared to around 6 yesterday. So I think it's working! *fingers still crossed* All the fry are still fine, the parents are getting bolder - they're taking them on some rather risky excursions! Including beside the koralia, where the fry were swept in...
  25. H

    white spot

good news - although it's too early to say if the treatment is working, nothing has died, including the fry, who appear to be thriving still.
  26. H

    white spot

    good point!
  27. H

    white spot

Thanks Ed I put the Esha treatment in last night, so I guess I will carry on with it. So far no harm seems to have been done. I haven't spotted the krib fry yet today, but the lights aren't on yet, and they do seem to come and go out of where ever their cave is.
  28. H

Is salt alright to use with scaleless catfish?
  29. H

    white spot

thanks Ed, is that as well as the Esha treatment?
  30. H

    white spot

There are no shrimp - they would be eaten! No snails either, they would also be eaten! Am I right in thinking that if I used copper based meds in my 100gal, I couldn't then use the plants in my shrimp tank at a later date? I don't intend to, but it's good to know. When I up the temparature...
  31. H

    white spot

I thought maybe I could do a big water change - would that upset the kribs?
  32. H

    white spot

Are there any rules for treating white spot in a planted tank? Usually I would use the 'Esha' copper based treatment (good stuff!) but this is the first time I've had white spot in a planted tank, so I don't know if that's the right thing to do? I also have kribensis fry (typical! They...

    Bristelnose Plec

I don't know if this is true or not. But I have three in my 100gal and I've never had any problems with them. Don't get a royal plec though! Mass plant devastation! lol I say this from experience!

    Which fish in hard water?

You could try stuff like putting peat in your filter, and using aquasoil. Alternatively you could get an RO unit and mix the water half and half with your tap water.
  35. H

    Which fish in hard water?

There are other types of rainbows that are smaller than bosmani. 'neon dwarf' and 'threadfin' spring to mind but I'm sure there are others. Cichlids tend to eat plants (I'm assuming you're talking about Malawi and Tangenika (sp?) cichlids).
  36. H

    Which fish in hard water?

rainbows like hard water, and they come in all sorts of colours and sizes.
  37. H

    Black ghost knife fish

I've never kept them personally, but I looked after them in my lfs when I worked there. Make sure it gets enough to eat. Holding food close to it's mouth with tweesers is a good idea, as the other fish won't eat it first.

    Gourami problems

I wonder if putting them in a quarentine tank and treating them with an anti internal bacteria medicine for a week would help? I mean when they're first purchased, not when they start showing signs. The three spot gourami and different colour strains of it (pearl, opoline, golden etc) are...

brilliant! Thankyou so much for those links, I will definately take a look.
  41. H

SAE behaviour - doing a dance!

They've gone back to their normal selves now. Both fish had drained colour. Nothing different to the tank at all that could have triggered them. I'm trying to get more, but nowhere near me stocks them. I asked at the pet shop but they just get a shipment of 'assorted fish' in, so I think...

SAE behaviour - doing a dance!

Lights are on... they're definately SAEs - they have the wavy line and top lip barbels.
  43. H

SAE behaviour - doing a dance!

They could be immature fish - I have only had them for maybe three months or so. I found them in my local pet shop, which has a few fish that are usually labelled wrong. These were labelled as 'siamese flying fox'. They could be stressed if they were fighting? But they're not usually like...
  44. H

SAE behaviour - doing a dance!

Interesting Chris, my lights have gone out now, but tommorow I'll be checking for barbles and wavy lines! They're both about three inches long (estimation). Shame they're not breeding... I was getting excited!
  45. H

SAE behaviour - doing a dance!

Sometimes my two SAEs (definately SAEs, the black stripe goes right down the tail) do a little shimmy dance, while nibbling at each other, and their colours go really dull so you can hardly see the stripe. Is this breeding behaviour? Usually they're best friends, don't fight, and have a...

    Silver Hatchets

I had some long finned danios once (they died of old age in the end) and they were lovely. They behave like normal danios, but they are really pretty.
  47. H

    Silver Hatchets

I think I read somewhere that the key to keeping hatchets in the tank, is to not have anything else that might startle them. Because when they're startled, they jump.

    Arowana

OMG that is horrible! That mouse is alive! Would you mind editing your post to include a warning? Some people like me, really don't want to look at stuff like that. I thought the link was to the planted tank that Ed was talking about.

    gold neon tetra

lol funny story - when i first started keeping tropical fish, I was sold a shoal of gold tetras. Except... the guy in the LFS said they were White Cloud mountain minnows!!! I cycled my tank with these! They all survived... don't know how though.
  50. H

    gold neon tetra

I've never seen a gold neon in the flesh (do they exist?), but at the LFS I used to work at we used to get albino neons, which were labelled as gold neons. You might want to check that's not what you are seeing.

    Buying mail-order fish

I bought some otos from an ebay seller called jorgea7462. They arrived very well packed, with heat pack, in fab condition. They didn't even look stressed. I put them in my tank to acclimatise, and the moment I released them they were off eating algae, not even hiding. It's hard to tell...
