    Journal Nano pond - 2020

Gill, one thing I did when redoing my garden was get two sheets of OSB ply (2.4m x 1.2m x 18mm) cut into thirds length ways, costs £14 each at timber merchant, to act as boards to protect the grass from heavy feet, wheel barrows etc. Worked a treat, protects the grass, keeps boots mud free(ish)...

Get one of these attachments, makes the job much easier as it cleans such a large area on one go. Also has a long handle so I can keep my back straight. Job done.

    Journal Nano pond - 2020

Most solar fountains are as previously stated "absolute crap". Search the forums for people trying to get them working for more than a couple of minutes a day for the two days in August when the sun shines directly on the solar panel. Also they suffer from algae which makes everything green...

Belfast Sink Pond - frost proofing?

But if they had the slightest sloping of the sides, which they must in order to get the clay sink out of the mould during manufacture, then freezing water will not break the sink, just rise up slightly during freezing.

Belfast Sink Pond - frost proofing?

I cycle past a house that has quite a few Belfast sinks with plants growing in them, just plonked on the ground. Seen them for years under snow and ice and they are clearly not affected by frost and/or freezing water. I very very much doubt they wouldn't be frost proof as would be a bit useless...

    Solar pump any one?

Saw a website somewhere where he did the calculations for a solar powered pump, similar to yours. Worked out could pump 20cc of water 10-20cm per second....20cc is not a lot

    solar powered air pump

Wow, our neighbours that paid £16,000 for their panels quite a few years back, so it would take 5 1/2 years to pay back assuming they had good summers days for 365days a year....:( They were very coy about costs, but I managed to get £800 a year saving back out of them, so 20 year payback...

    Journal Pond on a slope

Probably in early 90's I helped my mate make a pond & waterfall feature in his garden. He made base and waterfall/water run out of bricks and rubble with the "wet" surfaces covered with cement mixed with fibre glass fibres. The cement mix was mixed by hand in large tray with a measured amount...

    Journal Freds new pond build

When my mate put a plastic water pipe, in the same indoor rated pipe insulation outside to his shed, he didn't suffer freezing, but the birds pecking at it pulling chunks away. Not too sure if they actually flew away with what they pecked out or just dropped it in the garden or were just being...

    Journal Pond on a slope

Wooooow....you can't use these for a pond. They are not continuously rated. The one in the picture needs a 10minute rest every 1hour pumping. You need a proper kosher pond pump, preferably with input filter to supply your water feature. Something like this...

    Journal Freds new pond build

Only the green style Hozelock hose is not frost rated. All their other hoses (more expensive surprise surprise) are frost resistant, so that's, ultimate hose, ultraflex hose and ultramax hose. Personally after having numerous Hozelock failures, frost forcing pipe out of connector, hose...

    Journal Freds new pond build

Eagerly reading...keep it up. Be careful as the Hozelock stuff is not frost rated and, plastic fittings at least, can be pushed off both taps and hosepipe, when the pipe freezes, as has happened to me when I failed to put the hosepipe away one winter, after washing the car :(. Luckily didn't...

    Algae problems

In outside water sources algae is often due to water contamination from pesticides, heavy metals, industrial effluent etc killing off the fauna that normally would eat the algae. Normally high phosphate and/or nitrate and/or iron source would/can cause an algae bloom, but would normally be...

    Solar pond pumps

    A proper make (Hozelock, 450litres/hour) fountain pumps costs £20 and uses only 10W. That works out 10/1000 * 24 * 365 * £0.15 = £13 a year to have water running 24/7. Something to thing about.

    UV Filter Recommendation

The instructions I had with my pond UV clarifier stated "to be installed after the pump & filter" so that less dirt would collect on the UV unit internal glasswork. I used mine with a water feature to keep water clean, which it did admirably until after a year or two the UV tube looses its...

    Pondless waterfall....

I once had a waterfall feature, large sump (hole, rubber membrane, layer of sand, second membrane) covered with wire mesh & stones and a pump to top of feature. Despite never getting direct sunlight continually suffered algae growing on the feature & stones. The water was never green, just the...

    Algae question

I used to have a pond/water feature with UV steriliser. You could tell when the UV tube needed replacing, about every 12-18months as algae appeared and water feature bit got covered in green slime. I would clean off algae up as much as possible, dose water with anti algae and replace UV tube...
