    Trumpet snails

I have been give some Trumpet snails today by my LFS. They are smaller than I expected, but may not be mature. What size should they be and how quickly do they take to a) get to full size, and b) start breeding?

Your experience with Malaysian trumpet snails

They don't seem to be a big issue for my Cherries, and I've got more than when I introduced the shrimp to the tank. I know the Assassins have eaten countless "pest snails" that have arrived on plants. I understand they'll eat snail eggs, so if you don't want MTS to be permanent, I'd say...

    Breeding assasins

There were prey snails for a while, maybe a couple of months, but there were 20+ Assassins for a couple of years after. Over the last couple of years there have been no more than 5 or 6.

    Breeding assasins

For the first couple of years of my tank, Assasin Snails would breed like rabbits. So much so I had to sell a dozen every few months. In the last few years they don't seem to breed at all. Any thoughts on what might have made the difference?

That's all good to know. Should I perhaps drop the temp a couple of degrees? (Not just for the shrimp.)

    Cherry shrimp breeding

I've bought some Cherry Shrimp (including a berried female) and the sales assistant recommended keeping them at 28°c to breed them. I usually keep my tank around 25°c, which seems about right for Platties, Khulis, Ottos, Neons, Amanos, and a Beta. Is there a temp that'll be ok for the fish and...

    Shrimp noob advice

I can live with The Circle Of Life operating in my tank, as long as it's not a net population loss. (In my first tank with Swordtails, a huge majority of fry were predated by the parent fish!) So given adequate (if not perfect) habitat, what would be a good minimum number of adults to start...

    Shrimp noob advice

I've always had Amano shrimp in my 250L tank and they some of my favourite inhabitants, so I'm wondering about getting some a colourful variety a well. After a rescape, the tank is moderately well planted: (Amazon Swords, Anubis Barteri, Wysteria, C. Balansae, Eleocharis Parvula and Java Moss...

    Pond inverts as culture starter

Update - For a couple of weeks I've had a bucket of pond water in the garage with a heater in it set to about 20°c. Looking at water samples with a borrowed microscope, I'm pretty certain I have Daphnia in there. I haven't got magnification to the levels of most of the photos I've found online...

    Pond inverts as culture starter

There's no shortage of folk doing it in jars n Youtube either. I was only thinking of a 1L bottle on the windowsill as a way to get enough Daphnia to get a bigger culture started. I figure I'll try it (and the bucket, now with heater set to 20c +/-) and see how it goes. Worst case scenario -...

    Pond inverts as culture starter

Yeah, but that's inc P&P, which if offset against petrol costs for driving to my LFS .... Either way, it's still extravagant next to a bucket of pond water.

    Pond inverts as culture starter

Thanks Darrel. It sounds like Cyclopse I've spotted then. Would a 1L bottle indoors work? (Someone might object to a bucket of fermenting pond water in the kitchen. ) Thanks for the offer too. I'd like to try with what I've got at the moment (I've never got enough projects ) but I might come...

    Pond inverts as culture starter

Before I'm extravagant and spend a whole £3.83 on Daphnia to start a live food culture, I thought I'd have a go at harvesting some from our garden pond. I've just filled a bucket with some pond water (and a little blanket weed, duck weed and general plant detritus) and sat it in the garage. So...

    Brine for brine shrimp

I've been hatching brine shrimp and bought a new pack of aquarium salt. The salt in the new pack is slightly more yellow and has coloured the water green, where the old pack didn't. I'm pretty sure both packs were Interpet, though I may have bought Aqualibrium one time and Aqua Tonic Salt the...

    Inbreading in snails

I put 3 assisn snails in my tank a year or so ago which breed very well (without bcoming a pest as long as I sell some every few months). I know whelks are simple critters but at what stage is it worth adding some others to maintain a sensible level of gentetic diversity and avoid the problems...

    Big coloured shrimp

From what I've read, Sakura's just seem to be Cherry shrimp. Even the adult Cherrys I've seen are far smaller than my Amanos - at lease 50% smaller, if not more. What size are your Sakuras?

    Big coloured shrimp

The bigger shrimp I've seen, Amano and Bamboo, aren't particularly decorative in terms of colour. Are there any brighter colour morphs of larger shrimp, or are the colours restricted to the smaller species?

    Best shrimp for my tank?

Thanks. I thought RCS would be top of the list. Are there any different colours of Cherrys (I assume not from the name!) I'm aware that shrimplettes may get munched, which I'm not too worried about as it will be good for the fish. But that's also why I want them to breed easily. Will they breed...

    Best shrimp for my tank?

I'd love to have some Crystal Red Shrimp but I think they are not suited for my community tank. What I'd like is small shrimp (smaller than my current Amanos) that are easy to spot (ie bright-ish colours) are not too fussy about temp/pH/GH/etc, and breed relatively easily. I'm probably looking...

    Choosing shrimp

My experience of shrimp so far has just been Amanaos and, aside from them being quite shy, I don't seem to have problems with them. Now I'd like to add some more shrimp, preferably smaller and more colourful. Having done some reading and this is some of what I think I've learned: - Shrimp...

    Snails and temperature

I don't think it's down to over feeding. If anything I've been feeding a bit less recently as the algae is starting to bloom. (Thinkiing about that as I type, that could mean the opposite.) It is possible the little snails are Assassins I guess. The adults being fixed together for a while would...

    Snails and temperature

It seems I had been running my tank a little too cold at 23c. I've increased it to 25/26c and seem to have an increase in small pest snails. I have 3 Assassins in the tank (somewhere). Every time I've seen them in the last few months they seem to be clutched together, and they obviously haven't...

    Odd shrimp behaviour

I've already had to bear the Wrath Of Ceg once in the last 24hrs for suggesting I might add fauna. God help me now I have. (Other deities are available.) And I'll happily defend my use of them on another thread ;) but not this one. Did a 30% water change and rinsed the filter media yesterday...

    Odd shrimp behaviour

Is this usual behavior for Amano Shrimp? (Yes the photo is the right way up!) It's one of 6 that were added to the tank yesterday, but as far as I can tell ony one has been climbing out of the water. They all seemed a little subdued for the first hour or so then all set to work happily...

Bad tank mates for Amano shrimp

I've been reading a few threads on species X and Y being bad/ok with shrimp as tank mates. I understand there is a general size rule (if it fits in it's mouth ...) but does anyone have a general list (preferably English names, not Latin ;) ) for fish that either are, or are not ok with Amanos.
