I have been give some Trumpet snails today by my LFS. They are smaller than I expected, but may not be mature. What size should they be and how quickly do they take to a) get to full size, and b) start breeding?

They don't seem to be a big issue for my Cherries, and I've got more than when I introduced the shrimp to the tank. I know the Assassins have eaten countless "pest snails" that have arrived on plants. I understand they'll eat snail eggs, so if you don't want MTS to be permanent, I'd say...

I suspect I've got some Assasin snails that might disagree. 🐌

Would Khuli Loaches be a problem?

There were prey snails for a while, maybe a couple of months, but there were 20+ Assassins for a couple of years after. Over the last couple of years there have been no more than 5 or 6.

For the first couple of years of my tank, Assasin Snails would breed like rabbits. So much so I had to sell a dozen every few months. In the last few years they don't seem to breed at all. Any thoughts on what might have made the difference?

That's all good to know. Should I perhaps drop the temp a couple of degrees? (Not just for the shrimp.)

I should add our water is rock hard!

I've bought some Cherry Shrimp (including a berried female) and the sales assistant recommended keeping them at 28°c to breed them. I usually keep my tank around 25°c, which seems about right for Platties, Khulis, Ottos, Neons, Amanos, and a Beta. Is there a temp that'll be ok for the fish and...

Update - For a couple of weeks I've had a bucket of pond water in the garage with a heater in it set to about 20°c. Looking at water samples with a borrowed microscope, I'm pretty certain I have Daphnia in there. I haven't got magnification to the levels of most of the photos I've found online...

There's no shortage of folk doing it in jars n Youtube either. I was only thinking of a 1L bottle on the windowsill as a way to get enough Daphnia to get a bigger culture started. I figure I'll try it (and the bucket, now with heater set to 20c +/-) and see how it goes. Worst case scenario -...

Yeah, but that's inc P&P, which if offset against petrol costs for driving to my LFS .... Either way, it's still extravagant next to a bucket of pond water.

I put 3 assisn snails in my tank a year or so ago which breed very well (without bcoming a pest as long as I sell some every few months). I know whelks are simple critters but at what stage is it worth adding some others to maintain a sensible level of gentetic diversity and avoid the problems...

From what I've read, Sakura's just seem to be Cherry shrimp. Even the adult Cherrys I've seen are far smaller than my Amanos - at lease 50% smaller, if not more. What size are your Sakuras?

The bigger shrimp I've seen, Amano and Bamboo, aren't particularly decorative in terms of colour. Are there any brighter colour morphs of larger shrimp, or are the colours restricted to the smaller species?

Is this usual behavior for Amano Shrimp? (Yes the photo is the right way up!) It's one of 6 that were added to the tank yesterday, but as far as I can tell ony one has been climbing out of the water. They all seemed a little subdued for the first hour or so then all set to work happily...

I've been reading a few threads on species X and Y being bad/ok with shrimp as tank mates. I understand there is a general size rule (if it fits in it's mouth ...) but does anyone have a general list (preferably English names, not Latin ;) ) for fish that either are, or are not ok with Amanos.
