    Cleaning Magnet?

I've been using Stanley/utility blades to clean aquarium glass* for 10+ years and wont go back to using anything else. Very cheap, clean very well, faster and better than anything else. No expensive holder needed, obviously just be careful because it's a sharp blade. Magnet cleaners always...

    Filter/heater positioning

The way that particular Aqua-el filter (pretty low flow IME), the heater would ideally be right next to the filter . If this will be a "high-tech" CO2 injected tank, you will probably need to add an extra circulation pump to keep CO2 distribution consistent, at which point it doesn't...

Can anyone recommend a good timer?

I would probably only ever use those smart plugs for lighting tbh, wouldn't trust them for something like a CO2 solenoid!

Can anyone recommend a good timer?

I use a "smart plug", you can easily set various on/off schedules via an app on your phone and also turn the aquarium lights on/off using the app when your at home, if you ever want to for some reason lol. Works great for me :)...

Hydra stream 1 on a planted tank?

It only mentions removing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate on that product page. These don't cause issues in planted tanks and we purposely add nitrates and phosphates. Its definitely nothing like an RO unit. I think it would either be a total waste of time for a planted tank, or...

Those white discs in people's tanks?

So it just "probably" works when it doesn't need to do anything... If all of the other factors are already OK and "in balance", then you wouldn't have too much algae so wouldn't need one in the first place. Of course, great marketing.

Those white discs in people's tanks?

You won't get a straightforward answer to this question, people have vastly different opinions on them. Personally I think they are a bad investment, especially for beginners to the planted tank scene, who should be focusing on the basics to get rid of algae - not too much light, adequate flow...

    Timers on extension cord

Nope. I use multiple timers on extensions cords with no issues...and if I'm honest I do more daisy-chaining than I know I should! (only in my own home with low W). Can't think of any reason why an extension cord would cause a particular issue with timers, I mainly use mechanical timers though.

    Digital Timer Recommendation Needed

I'd also stick to mechanical timers! Most of my digital ones have failed, I now use them merely as on/off switches for pumps so I don't have to pull plugs out during water changes. Never had a mechanical timer fail me yet however. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cheap low-standing ADA 60P stand ideas

I'd want to add some additional 2x4's inside the IKEA cabinet for extra structural support...especially if I was putting an ADA tank on it!

DIY Project Repairing a faulty Arcadia Luminaire

Just thought I'd post this info here, as I stupidly rushed ahead and bought the wrong ballast unit to fix my Arcadia 4 x 24w T5 when I did this a few months ago . If you have an original 4 x 24w T5 Arcadia luminaire (same style as Jame's in this thread, not the new ones!), then the...

    Power heads

Tunze wavemakers are very well regarded on the salty side of the hobby, like a premium version of Hydor Koralias, very good build quality. Not got any personal experience on the Fluval Sea wavemakers, or heard much about them as they are much newer than the Tunze Nanostream, but the CP2 is less...

    zeolite and purigen

Just wondering why you would want to spend money on Purigen or zeolite for a planted tank in the first place?

Auto Dosing EI with a dosing pump (diagram and calculations)

Good to know, will probably still use it then :). I have lot's of little things of silicone that come in...'packets' I would say. Guess you could call them tubes too, they aren't like the proper big tubes of silicone for tank building. Loving this thread so far!

Auto Dosing EI with a dosing pump (diagram and calculations)

That's great, good to know I can use those digital timers. This is very useful for me. Last time I went high-tech, I couldn't keep up with the fert dosing and pruning...so I decided I would stick low-tech for a while. After seeing the tanks on this site, I'm now making my shrimp tank...

Auto Dosing EI with a dosing pump (diagram and calculations)

Nice work, looks awesome! Just the kinda thread I was looking for. I was looking at dosing pumps a few days ago, found these cheap ones: http://www.williamson-shop.co.uk/100-series---230v-ac---silicone-tubing-83-c.asp. I have a couple of questions :D. Is potassium sorbate harmful to shrimp...
