Water simply goes in down though the sponges, and out up through the media baskets. Same design since the 04 series, but each new iteration seems to have slightly more efficient media choices, a stronger pump and more durable priming handle.
I also use Tescos thin bleach for recharging Purigen and it goes white, I think I maybe get 5-10 recharges before it's permenantly stained light brown and I change it.
I soak in bleach for 24h then rinse it under that tap and leave it in some DI/RO water for another 24h with some dry sodium...
You could get an A4 sheet of stainless steel mesh on eBay pretty cheaply and make our own intake. You'd get to choose the size of the mesh too.
I did this and just wrapped it around the top part of an old Fluval intake, wrapping the bottom with a small piece of stocking and securing everything...
My 105 and 405 are over 10 years old and still going strong, if one of them dies I'd probably replace it with the newer model, but there doesn't seem to be any features compelling me to upgrade.
Built-in UV systems are very inefficient and are only useful in preventing green water - something that shouldn't be a constant issue in a planted tank anyway, so are only remotely useful for the first few weeks, after which the bulbs just wastes electricity with no measurable benefits for the...
If you think the flow is too much, just add a spray bar, if needed drill extra holes in it and point it against the tank glass. The flow can also be reduces on the filter anyway.
I always go for the most flow and biggest filter possible, leaves more room for error. If you are only lightly...
Depends on the tank really! If was just one of my personal plant jungle/shrimp/fish tanks I would go for 2 pumps, function over aesthetics.
If it's a relatively open scape with lots of open water space, or if the tanks is on display somewhere others are always looking at it, I'd go for the...
I'd get 2 x 1600's if you can, more adjustable and evenly spread out flow than with just one pump. More cables and in-tank equipment though, so it's a slight trade-off.
The suction cups on the Newaves seem great, I've been using 2 x 1600s and 2x 2700s on a marine tank I maintain for over 2...
Simply an addition to help flow rates .
I've also used cheaper Koralia-style pumps from eBay that use suction cups instead of magnets like the "Sunsun" wavemakers, I tend to use these in bigger tanks 200-500L simply to save on cost. The suction cups don't last long but otherwise...
The best way IME would be an additional wave-maker/circulation pump rather than a traditional power head. Something like a Hydor Koralia 3200, or the equivalent model NeWave or Tunze pumps :).
Soooo much more flow than just a spray bar or lily pipe from an external, but it's a wider flow when...
I've just used a small strip of stainless steel mesh that came free with some Taiwan moss from eBay, seems to work very well. I did have to keep cutting/pulling pieces off until I was satisfied it wasn't restricting flow or weighing down the intake too much though, I'm very happy with the final...
Hmmm, tbh I'm really struggling to find anything about this feature on ADA's site, Iwaki's site or elsewhere, so I suspect they probably don't have the ability to maintain the same rpm by adjusting power. Probably just as well, as the its simplicity that I like about the Super Jets, along with...
If this is true, +1 respect to ADA, and the ES-150 moves up a few places on my "eventually buy" list.
Trying to look for more info on this now though...as I haven't heard of this sort of pump design before? Unlike certain Ehiems, the ADA filters don't have microprocessors, so I cant quite...
You might get away with one, two would be better though, and wouldn't be too much flow at all if you aim them in a suitable direction . Better to get the 1600lph though, they can be found for the same price anyway!
In my 80l I have a Koralia 1600lph and a Fluval 105 (480lph), for a...
What volume is the tank?
I usually recommend Hydor Koralia pumps for water circulation, for very big tanks though I go for the cheaper eBay copies lol.
I have an 80L with a Fluval 105 external and a Koralia 1600, and have had even more on it in the past, so I don't think it would be too much at all.
Koralias give out a wider flow than powerheads or external outlets so you could probably do even more!
This is refreshing and odd for me to read, a forum where filters can be discussed without it turning into the Eheim fan club doing their best to bash Fluval externals  .
I'd vote for the 105 too, I run one on ~60L of water and it's excellent. The tank only has shrimp in it, but it has a...
