Its more than likely just the ballast nothing to do with switches etc, the ballast went on one of my EQJ units as well, I changed the ballast and all is well. It seems to be an issue with these particular lighting units, the ballasts blow. The price we pay I guess, cheap lighting units = cheap...

Personally I would give them a pass, they won't give you the lumen output if you want to run a highlight tank, you will probably end up spending more money eventually, been there done that on other equipment.

These are great light units for the money you pay, I have 3 of these now. Just bear in mind the legs that come with the 3x24W units are practically useless rubbish, they do come with a hanging set though which is good quality. I wouldn't let that put you off though, hard to beat the price.

Nice writeup James, I have tried the Osram 865s and they grow plants very well indeed, some plants grew very compact under them compared to other lamps I have used. I will keep the 880s in mind for next time.
