Hi I'm new to the forum and although I have kept fish previously I was never too successful at keeping plants, I'm now at the planning stage of a new planted tank and have been doing a little research into substrates (always used plain gravel or plain sand in the past) any way to the point... I think I've decided to try moler clay when I do get going other than being so much cheaper are there any other advantages to this over specialist substrates or indeed any serious disadvantages. If I understand correctly the dedicated substrates are more nutrient loaded is this correct?
Linked to my first question I've read that I can 'fortify' the moler clay with osmacote my second question is this when people mention the osmocote I've seen no mention of the granule size is it the cone ones i should use or the single granules. also I always thought adding nutrients could feed algal blooms is this prevented by the moler clay absorbing and holding back the nutrients for the plants use
sorry if these are noobish questions or covered elsewhere in the forum but it's been a while since I attempted plants. thanks in advance for any input:)

Baked clay is fine to use, osmacote is ok but use very sparingly, just a few grains every square 150mm!
The expensive planting mediums like Amazonia are very good because they are not only loaded with nutrients but have a softer texture & a more pleasing colour for many scapers!
