My current scape has had a shelf in it all along.

I liked the challenge of building it, it allowed me to raise some of the plants nearer to the surface for more light, and I rationalised that the space underneath would be a sanctuary for shy fish.
I still like the principal, and in a 2.5ft deep tank, it does provide some advantages, but under normal circumstances the "cave" underneath is inaccessible and is just a magnet for crud.
So I'm thinking about removing it. But what to replace it with? Any suggestions?
