Thanks for the replies fellas. The FX5 is a funny one in that it has kind of an external pump instead of a head like most filters. I've not stripped it to check the impeller, I'll have a look and see if I can get to it over the weekend. When it's running it's simply awesome!

Interested to see if you can keep that sand clean, i couldn't!

It's gonna be a challenge mate and I don't mind admitting failure

Or do what i did at one point and buy new sand
