If you blow into it and find it easy then you have the 'from regulator' end (mine is tapered). If you blow into it and there is resistance you have the 'to bubble counter end' (mine is 'square'.)
I would set it vertical if possible so that when the gas passes through the valve falls back down to the glass.
So the order you have is:
regulator > needle valve (if seperate from reg) > solenoid (if seperate from reg) > check valve > bubble counter > diffuser.
