Hi Karen, Hoover substrate that isn't covered in plants, waft your hand over the moss to dislodge detritus then syphon, I like to use a small diameter hose to clean moss takes longer but you can remove more crap.
I use standard sized hose pipe and waft it around above the substrate to dislodge any rubbish on the bottom. I actually use a cheap hose pipe I got from screwfix, can be a pain as it kinks easily but you can nip it really easily to control the flow around more delicate areas
I get a cheap gravel vac (wide tube at bottom) and steal a old set of tights of the missus and cut a piece off the tights and stretch it over the wide tube, wrap a elastic band to hold it in place. Vac away with no hassle of sucking all the gravel and plants up the tube.
