Is there any technical difference between a broad inflow lily pipe and a slim inflow lily pipe or are the differences just aesthetics?

By broad I assume you're referring to the violet inflows, those usually allow for a higher volume of water to flow through at a given time compared to regular inflows. It's not really necessary unless you have a very powerful filter.

Thank you @Nuno Gomes, yes I was referring to a Violet Inflow (good to know what they are called). Would a Fluval 307 be considered a "powerful filter"? I'm running it on a 167L tank.

Not really, I would consider a powerful filter a jbl E1502 and up, more towards the Eheim 2080 side of things.
