Hi all,

New to the forum and in the process of starting a new aquarium. It’s a Juwel Rio 180. Rock and bog wood hardscape, sand substrate front 1/3 of tank and ADA aqua soil to the rear. Low tech setup with mainly tetras and Cory. Potential dwarf cichlid also.

Just after some plant suggestions please, thinking the following so far;

Java Fern or Narrow leaf Java fern (main bog wood feature)
Anubias nana and petite in between rocks/wood
Larger anubias feature for rock/wood

Monte Carlo (will this carpet and spill down over rock?)
Dwarf Hair grass
Christmas moss or flame moss
Need Crypt suggestions
Need Ludwigia suggestions
Ambulia
Need back ground suggestions

Thanks for any help.

Thanks,

I probably don’t have the room for a large carpet anyway but was thinking for something to spill down over the rock.

Sand is low level at the front and rocks form a retaining wall of sorts for deeper aqua soil in the back half of the tank.

Will try get a hardscape photo when set up

Hi all,

See mock up of hard scape, bog wood is currently soaking to water log and leach out tannins.

Sand towards front of tank and aqualsoil behind rocks to give depth and height.

Thinking narrow leaf Java fern on left bog wood, Anubias nana and petite in and amongst rock and right hand bog wood. Monte Carlo overspilling rock from upper level if possible.

Just stuck for mid and back ground ideas. Right hand side highest planing slopping down to left with maybe dwarf hair grass or dwarf sag behind the left wood towards back left of tank.
Some type of moss to add to both bog wood.
Thoughts and suggestions welcome, trying to plant relatively heavily without having too many different plants.

Also trying to figure out how to tie rock to the right hand bog wood because even if it water logs and sinks successfully I’m worried it will want to tip if knocked during maintenance.

Hi all,

So many plant choices, how many varieties would you look at for this tank. Looking at the following, realizing some may be out of the low tech scope but this is what Im liking so far. What would be your choices or alternative suggestions?

100%
Microsorum pteropus - Narrow/Trident/mini (mixture or whatever is available)
Anubias nana, maybe 1 x larger variety
Monte Carlo (not as a carpet)
Rotala Green

Possibles
Blyxa Japonica
Hygrophila Lancea
Syngonanthus - Manaus, Madeira, Belem
Staurogyne repens
Hygrophila polysperma
Limnophila repens, Limnophila sp. Mini Vietnam
Bacopa monnieri
Lindernia rotundifolia ‘Variegated’
Some type of moss

Hydrocotyle Tripartita will grow in low tech, and can be attached to hardscape. Might give you the plants spilling over rock look you want with Monte Carlo. Just press it down every now and then to keep it growing horizontally. Like so:
