Peat

i use crystal clear sphagnum peat if i have to use it in my tank its cheap
and easy to use and i have heard its environmentally friendly as well but i
dont know how true that is

Does peat reduce General Hardness or only Carbonate Hardness ?

Hi all,
No it wont effect GH
It will, sphagnum peat will sequester any cations and exchange them for a proton (H+ ion), (see below). Having said that you are right and you need an awful lot of peat to reduce the hardness of hard water, so it isn't a practical option.

The KH suppression is to do with the organic acids, carbonic acid, carbonate equilibrium and pH, you can have a look here for details: <http://yosemite.epa.gov/r10/ecocomm.nsf/c6b2f012f2fd7f158825738b0067d20b/9a6226e464ecdb3f88256b5d0067de0d/$FILE/chapter3.pdf>.

Have a look at this post for a description of the process: <Another Peat Filtration Question | Apistogramma.com>.
