Does anyone know where I can get some good old fashioned peat?
Been to DIY sheds and large garden centres and they have all stopped doing it

I've got some Irish peat moss spare, but you can find it easily on eBay, just make sure it's natural with nothing else added.

i use crystal clear sphagnum peat if i have to use it in my tank its cheap
and easy to use and i have heard its environmentally friendly as well but i
dont know how true that is

Does peat reduce General Hardness or only Carbonate Hardness ?

It will, sphagnum peat will sequester any cations and exchange them for a proton (H+ ion), (see below). Having said that you are right and you need an awful lot of peat to reduce the hardness of hard water, so it isn't a practical option.
