Planting a large tank

Hi I'm new here, My dad has a 46x16x18 inch tank and he has enlisted me in sort of designing the tank so I'm wanting to plant it quite heavily. So what is needed? Our current equipment is a lid with light holders but we don't have lights and my dad thinks we have a good filter. Could you also send us in the right way to stuff to read online that will help with our task.

A very simple & easy to understand summary. Also read up on all the tutorials articles if you can. Trust me they are all definetely worth your time.
