Is there a correct way to trim stem plants ?

When I usually cut the tops the plants end up looking sort of wrong and un-natural.

Is there a correct technique to keep the plant looking correct at the top ?

"Black Current Method" works with most groups of stem-plants.

- Trim 1/3 of stems quite short above substrate. Choose the longest ones - remove leaves from lowest 2 cm. of stem of a few of off-cuts, and re-plant those in the group - let the group grow on, until next 1/3 of stems are tall enough to be cut in same way, re-planting a few again - let the group grow on, untill last 1/3 of stems are tall enough to cut in same way, re-planting a few again...........and continue this procedure.......
This will keep the group of stems young and virile, and nice to look at, at all times. On colured stems it will furthermore "move" the colour of tips continuously to lower position in the group - giving a nice spread of colour to the group.
