Beautiful fish and tanks! The other fish I really love from Congo are the larger and more unusual lampeyes - Plataplochilus especially. They would seem to combine well with many of your fish.
The Phractolaemus are fascinating! I had the chance to add them to my swamp monster at one point, but felt it was too busy and they would be at risk from my Hemichromis. If I did something similar again I would be tempted to given up on growing plants and keeping mid-sized cichlids and had them, mormyrids and Distichodus decemmaculatus or teugelsi and a bigger group of Plataplochilus as a Congo tank instead!
I'm sorry I missed this. I often lurk in topics here, but I have forgotten mine for a bit.
I think you were right in not adding the Phracto's to a tank with territorial fish. My LFS had them together in a tank with... I can't quite remember but it definitely was a biggish West African cichlid. All they did was being chased around and hide. It was kind of heartbreaking (so naturally I brought them all with me). They do very well here in a tank in which nobody bothers them.
I really like your stocking idea. Distichodus are one of my most favorite fish, but naturally you won't quickly find them on the UKAPS forum. I have kept D. teugelsi before. I think they are a bit more colourful than D. decemmaculatus, but otherwise, they are very much alike. My D. sp. Lefini are also real eye catchers when they're on it. If you ever have the chance to get some, do it!
Edit: Did some digging in some old topic of mine on a Dutch forum. I found these pictures of D. teugelsi and D. sp. Lefini.
Do keep in mind that the D. sp. Lefini was still quite thin from his time at the LFS.
Edit 2: Oh, and the reason I was trying to find this topic was this:
Terrible picture, I know, but that right there is a young Nannocharax. I haven't figured out what the species is and I haven't seen anyone breeding them, so I l'm quite proud of finding this youngling here. I found another one, a bit bigger, but it got away before I got the phone ready.
