You are right about the bigger dof with the smaller sensor on the iPad. To get a closer dof in the camera you’d need high f stops 16-22 but that requires a lot more light, hence you will need the flash. It all comes down to physics at the end of the day though and you’ll never get a larger dof...
and don't forget that Mark was using his 135mm on a full frame body so it was actually 135mm. On your camera the Nikkor 135mm would be 202mm as I think you have a crop factor of 1.5 on nikons? (if they work the same as canon which is 1.6)
You mentioned above about getting a wide for great...
If you've already got the old 50mm then the sigma and tamron are very good and have a limited macro function although I tend to favour Sigma.
Re the 50mm you said you've got the old version. Is this the mk1 as it was seen as a better lens than the mk2 you've linked to? The newest 50mm f1.8...
Thanks :)
I was naughty and put them in the "From this to this" thread george :) We should all have a trip up there sometime some stunning places to go.
Cheers Ady. Yep that was further upstream. The original photo was taken balanced on a boulder which has shifted over the years and not...
ill probably get shouted at for this but what the hell :) mods feel free to move or delete if you like
This is a rather large tank on the River Llugwy.

Thanks both :)
Great stuff. just give me a bell :)
Lol no. it was just the flash caused a shadow which hid her feet. it was actually a good job too as she'd changed her posh shoes for some slipons so they could go walking around the farm!
Thanks Paulo, Im always up for a destination wedding ;)
I did a years review to put up some of my favourite wedding images. Ive been using a lot more flash this year after doing some courses, Damian mcgillicuddy's being the best one
There's about 250 images so don't click if you're on a slow connection!

old thread I know but Ive just ordered a 16-35mm F2.8 which should be here Monday :D so my old canon 10-22mm will be up for sale to pay towards it! After seeing Marks images with the lens it pushed me to get the full frame version for my 5d as the old 10-22 I have only works with my backup...
Re: seiru stone in Bonsai
thanks all.
Re the root ball i'd tend to say no but it should be ok in the summer months. The reason we dont use things like osmocote in Bonsai is because unlike our aquatic tank plants they dont require feeding all year round and you only feed bonsai when they are...
Thought I'd post this up which is a pic of a Bonsai Larch forest I planted up tonight.
Its a forest of 23 Larch trees planted in a big tray pot with Seiryu Stone and some garden moss in the cracks. The path is made up of Akadama and the rest is my normal bonsai mix. The Seiryu works really...
Anyone want to buy a kidney?
Its a big hike over the 5dii so Ill be staying with mine for a while until the price drops a little but the dual card slots and 61 point AF from the 5 grand 1DX is mighty tempting!
Have you seen the price of the new wireless 600EX-RT flash though? £679...
Ill chip in :)
I use 2 x 5D mkii's at weddings. The main reason for choosing the full frame (FF) sensor is the uber small and nice depth of field (DOF) you can get with fast glass over cropped sensors plus the low noise performance at high ISO's. Yes you can still get a nice DOF with a crop...
Thanks  I may have a few as he kept moving but it doesnt look as good as the face on shot. Ill check to see if there are others.
Blinkin eck, wheres the embarrased smiley...
Thanks so much for your kind words. No problems with posting the link (ive already checked) and...
They are all pretty good as long as you don't want to do any low light stuff as they don't let enough light in for that. daytime stuff would be fine though. If you did go for the Sigma I'd look for the APO version instead of the one you listed as it has better glass.
my misses loves it too! :) Thanks for the nice comments, think Im going to print it for the wall.
@greenjar, he does have a grey beard under that chin :)
Thanks both, he really is a good dog but getting old at 13 now.
Re the black background I Hung a dark throw from the couch. I had just the tank lights on in the room so it was just light enough to focus then made sure the settings on the camera gave a black picture, ie completely underexposed...
I picked up a Damian McGillicuddy 19" Beauty Dish yesterday for use at the weddings I cover. I wanted to test it but my wife and daughters went to bed so the dog volunteered for biscuits instead!
The dish itself is really sturdy and collapsable but I haven't practiced how long that takes...
very nice mark and that looks like some kit! just had a google of it. how are you using it at the moment? is it mounted on one of those frames that link it to the camera?
theres a few tips and links to other sites in here.

Ta Danno, yes another year older! It might get that way you know. I need a decent laptop to edit the wedding files on the go so mr mac may just happen in the future... (dont holder yer breath though!!! :) )
Cheers viktor. im looking into that first one now
thanks Ceg, ill go and do some...
Ive got some videos taken on my canon 5d mk ii of my nano that I want to piece together and change the soundtrack but unfortunately I dont have any software to do this.
Is anyone aware of any cheap or freeware video editing programs that can work with the .mov files that comes out of the canon...
Re: Three Rare bird's
lol @sparrows! great shots john, ever the increasing bird expert photographer!
Ive sent you a mail to your fsmail account re the dartford warbler you asked about.
dont bother with the 300d, its just too old and slow nowadays and im not sure if its compatible with the EFS system? the 350d on the other hand is a great camera second hand. Ive taken some of my best photos on a 350d and the sensor is the same as what was in the 20d and 30d.
its 50mm on a full frame so around 30mm on crop depending on your make of camera.
Im not sure you could limit the use of UWA in competitions when Amano uses it himself in some of this shots by the look of them. (not sure whether its UWA on an SLR or the large format equivalent he uses?)
eg...
Cheers George, no pressure whatsoever with the boss then! Ive got to get another 5d this year to replace my backup so will see how the L lenses go. Ive got the 50mm F1.4 and 85mm F1.8 as a stop gap as im really getting into primes at the moment.
Cheers Rik, Im not sure about the flowers being...
thats a good price for the 24-105l george so I can see why youre going down that route :) Im hankering for a 50L or 85L at the moment but will need a few weddings behind me before I can get one (Got 7 booked so far this year :) )
really nice photos george. Did you look at the 24-70 f2.8 when you were considering lenses? I went for that over the f4 due to the extra stop of light (handy for dark churches!)
thats not a true macro vito for info.
id still go with the nifty 50 (for portraits) or if you can get a second hand one in your budget the tamron 90mm macro
superb photos my G, the first with the mountain goat is my fav but i epsecially like the beach one with the stoned leading your eyes down to the water. :)
not if you are panning as you would select mode 2 on a canon IS lens mounted on a tripod or monopod (vertical damping only) Not sure if nikons do this tho
Nope, definately the same lens with a 52mm filter
Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens
Canon EOS 50mm/F1.8 Ef Lens (Mk11)
The 50mm lens (nifty 50) is an excellent first lens to buy as its a prime lens (doesnt zoom), its very very sharp for the money and can be used in low light.
hi lil-lynx, the links above are both for the same lens. This lens wont do true macro either. For macro on a canon youd need something like the canon EFS 60mm macro, Tamron F2.8 90mm macro or canon 100mm F2.8 macro (theres probably more but cant think of them for now.
The lenses above will...
Re: car window shot on the way to work
very nice shot mark, its got great depth. the wheat fields by us look particularly good at the moment when it blows in the wind. ive got a nice shot from a while back of a pano over the fields with a big storm in the distance but bright sun on the...
cant check the ebay link as in work but id say try out a 190 and 055 if you can. Im only 5 foot 7 but would like the change my 190 in the future for the 055 to get the extra height. its worth getting pro versions as well as youll love the foam wrap around the top when its -5 degrees outside...
both the tamron 90mm and the 100mm canon would get my vote but look at the 60mm EFS canon too. dan crawford has this and I he mentioned it was a really good lens.
Cheers mark, ive downloaded edius to try last night so jsut need to find some videos now so I can learn how to use it!
Jealous about that zfinder as it looks way cool!
great video mark. I finally got my hands on a 5d at xmas and have been reading up on the video side of things. Have you signed up for a pro account on vimeo and how are you finding the editors, ie the sony vegas or edios?
ouch, sorry to hear about your back LD.
Great pics on here of our winter wonderland and most excellent videos from saintly
One I got on the way home tonight.
you been breaking and entering again george  nice shots
Very nice seal pics from ceebee and saintlys 3d pop in the snow
one from out the car window when stuck in traffic and stopped
very nice, see youre using that 10mm now G :D
This was my view on the way home for most of the night. Speedo on zero and parked up in traffic with an occasional stroll around when people got out for a chat :)
I see where youre coming from mark. I think my shrimp tank picture in my sig was direct off studio. Markwebb would still need to buy stands for his flashes though unless he has four hands :) or do what theyve dont on the pic below
Id quite like to go down the softbox router or at least try it...
id say for taking picks of tanks you may get more use out of a softbox and a boom so you can position it above your tank. You can then use a single flash then for the whole tank and use the second for rear flash or something. Thats what id go for anyway. Have you seen the guides on the CAU...
ive not used brollys with my speedlights but done it with stofens pointed down from above. The problem I always have is that my flash cable is too short so ive tended to use studio lights on stands as its easier, like this usually
i did a quick n dirty comparison at different focal lengths on the 10-22mm. Pic is below, sorry for the size but it needs to be big really. Its quite surpising that the 10mm makes teh 90cm look square with the depth it shows! Probably wont be photographing mine at 10mm due to this but it also...
sorry if ive confused Georeg, i was saying id got mine at a time when it was cheap (about 3 years back). its closer to £560 now so a real big gap compared with the sig :(
There does look to be a bit of distortion on this one but its not a straight on shot so you will get some wobble at angles.
George, if you want I can take some pics of my tank straight on tonight to see if theres any distortion but this doesnt answer your sigma question unfortunately. Maybe...
im not entirely sure on barrel distorion on the sig 10-20mm although it is a really good lens, probably best to check with someone whose got one. I got the canon 10-22mm at a time when it was cheap(ish) compared to now (£430 and UK sourced). There's no (or hardly any) barrel distortion on the...
i dont tend to use it that much tbh because I dont find the cord long enough. When Ive been shooting my nano recently ive been bouncing off the ceiling but this wont work as well with larger tanks. on the larger ones i tend to use the studio lights.
Im intending to buy a flash bracket to try...
I got a cheap one from ebay (bout £15). Ive seen the canon one and it seems that the cheapos are made in the same factory, they just dont have the canon stamp!
away from this thread nikon lover!
You could try taking all the batteries out inc the watch battery that saves the settings. if this doesnt work try downloading a firmware install for the camera and run it over usb. if this doesnt work it is now a nice doorstop as it will probably cost...
lol! I thought it might be a case of that. Ive seen them mounted on racks which are geared to slowly roll the whole calera forwards and backwards for the focus. Such a tight DOF but such an ace lens!
nice one george, photography is top knotch as always :)
Ive always thought about doing a marine tank but never actually bitten the bullet. Do you get a lot of evaporation and have to refill with salty water?
i perfer that last pano dan but then Im biased to panoramics :) Looks very nuclear!
how many stops difference were you using between the different pics?
430 is fine john but if you ever intend on buying more than one thent he 580exii is good to go for as it will master other flashes as george has said. The bigger flash also has a longer reach, as tom said it just depends on what you want to use it for.
Kerso is worth checking on prices as...
before you disapear Tom is there any advice youve got on any PS processing (if you used any) to get the clouds to stand out so well? Ive tried in the past to use a grad in lightroom on the scky and reduce the exposure and bump contrast but it never comes out like that!
You can get away with it handheld as you can recompose before the clouds move. Its when its on a tripod that you get the main problems with clouds and wind.
Amazing picture Tom, such detail to it with the light and drk areas :) Sorry to hear youre stopping your tanks but in a worthwhile...
just to take it slightly off topic. we used mac minis on my photography course in college this year and after a full term of them I was glad to get rid and back to my PC. I know they are great and they are designed for DTP but I just couldnt get my head around the way the op-sys worked...
very nioce georeg, plenty of pre built iwagumis there! Daves right about the BW for that hotel pic, bit like that film with the haunted house on the sea cliff
