does sound cheap for a new fish, just gotta convince the wife that £300 is a sound investment, haha.
Worst case scenario i might just go for the zebra acara i've been eyeing up. Not sure how they feel about plants but the blue acaras ive had in the past were ok.
George as in George Farmer or am i missing something?
$60 per fish for the Kullander... not too bad, but added on shipping...
Gotta convince the wife its a good idea, breed them and make money (maybe) haha.
I know that it has been bred in Canada and sold there, im hoping i can get hold of something from someone. There is a supposedly guy locally who knows one of the guys who described the fish but i'm having difficulty getting hold of him at the moment. As for the pricing... yeah i need to be...
As the title suggests, i'm looking for the recently described Apistogramma Kullander, also known as Kullanderi and Gigas. If anyone knows where i can source said fish, especially local to suffolk, i'd really appreciate it. Cheers.
So as the title says, im looking for some Ivanacara Adoketa (Zebra Acara) for my large(ish) tank thats going to be given over to a Rio Negro Biotope. Stocking will be a pair of these absolutely stunning fish with Rummy Nose Tetras, Corydoras Duplicareus and Hypancistrus inspector if i can find...
living in ipswich these days. Went to Swallow aquatics at mill race earlier today as its probably the best one near me but i was incredibly dissapointed.
So all of my LFSs have... well a dismal choice of wood. Mostly pre packaged small-medium pieces of driftwood, redmoor and the corky/bark like wood that belongs in a terrarium, not an aquarium.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a website where they have taken pictures of the driftwood so you...
Ive applied for a management position at a fish shop in my local area. They deal in everything fish related but also have a small mammals and bird section.
They have two shops. One in my local area and another about 60 mikes away in London. I will be expected to travel to and manage both stores...
i work for well known supermarket? lol. i just thought it may be mildly amusing. It was from tesco. its a tiny little thing maybe 7" across.
I may give it a go but with a much smaller quantity of water i figure the fluctuations may be more extreme. What shrimp and plants are you going with in...
Hey everyone. I've decided that as I cannot currently set up a new full system, due to current circumstances, to take on a different project just to satisfy my need to get planting.
I'm attempting a shrimp bowl. It's unfiltered (daily water changes are obviously a must) but there will be a...
i left some laying about, there was also a good lot of bogwood too.
unfortunately alot of the shops around here are really disappointing for wood and stone/rock. Happen to know anywhere nearby thats good for stone that may be suitable for an Iwagumi set up? shop or outdoors?
well i did pick out 2 of the nicer pieces for myself so the quality may be lower now haha. Its a good shop to look around though. ground floor is livestock and accessories, 1st floor is aquariums, cabinets and reptiles.
They had a reasonable selection of plants last time i went too.
Its...
sounds good to me then!
how far south into essex are you? i saw some good redmoor at Fintasia in Braintree the other day and a rather ncie white/blue betta.
Are they open topped or are they like the edge with a glass ceiling? my only concern would be with a betta being a labyrinth fish that it may not survive.
Basic rules of iwagumi is the simpler the better. Have a search for some of Amanos iwagumi layouts and see what he has done over the years. But thats also my personal preference any way, with an iwagumi i would keep it as two plants.
Just remember, its your layout, its your tank and youre the...
follow the rules of thirds, move the largest stone to the right slightly and then put the 2nd largest stone in an opposing position, move the other stones around from there, otherwise i think the size and choice of stone is rather good. What are you planning to plant with it?
aqua one aqua vogue

It's not so much an upgrade more that it's the standard light unit that comes with the tank ill be buying. I'm going to be running an FE co2 system as I used to and the cabinet is big enough for a pair of 5KG extinguishers and my filter. I was just enquiring further about the LED unit.
Cheers...
rain water will be a possibility if im allowed to install a water butt at the new property. I dont really fancy leaving loads of buckets on the patio as i kinda like keeping things tidy. Its certainly a possibility if i can though.
Isnt there a risk with disease and pathogens from bird blahblahblahblah on...
Does anyone know much about the new aqua vogues led system? all i can find is that there are various light modes witha mix of blue and white LEDs with a total wattage of 44w on the 135l veersion. If im looking to go high tech with co2, ferts and lights would that be powerful enough? does anyone...
Its not just down to the plants, im looking at maybe going for a group of discus or getting back into groups of appistos like i used to. Eventually id like to be able to breed them too. Im fully aware its not ust down to water hardness and that other elements factor into it but im looking to...
Hey there ladies and gentlemen. Im looking to get back into the game soon (and have eyed up a freaking lovely 135l tank with which to do so) and i have the misfortune of living in a hard water area. If i could afford the RO kit id be going for it without question but its not an option for me.
I...
so as the title states, i bought a t5 bulb instead of a t8 online to replace the bulb that had bust. However, i have decided that im going to use said bulb in conjunction with the t8 to create a bit more oomph for my plants.
Heres the problem.
I cannot, for the life of me find a t5 starter...
Be careful with boiling stones/rocks. They can explode/split/crack. Especially if they were to have an air pocket in the middle of them. Personally i would give them a good scrub with a scouring pad with just plain hot water, not too hot that you cant put your hands in but hot enough for it to...
im also looking at this LED Aquarium Light 12" Hi Lumen Planted tank Single Bright | eBay
Im trying to achieve what we all would like to achieve i guess, something that works, looks good and is cheap!
I am just wondering as im looking to make my tank look 'cleaner' and want to replace the tubes i have.
This is the item in question Aquarium Fish Tank Clip Clamp Lamp 96 LED Light White Blue Lighting | eBay
If it is good enough what would you think the max price should be for it?
cheers
wow, cracking idea. What sort of netting is it? does it have to be a certain size to be safe for fish? last thing i would want is for any fish to get caught up in the net.
I have real difficulty in keeping moss for some reason. Ive got some java on my bogwood but its literally 1 small strand...

I was just wondering what fish you guys think are overpriced. Not just bread and butter fish but in general.
For me i think neons are generally quite expensive, especially when you consider the hardiness of the captive stock.
But for a single overpriced fish, despite the rarity, this takes...
there are 3 'caves' as such in my tank but they are all grouped together in the middle. There is alot of foliage for the male to hide if necessary as i havent had the chance to do a trim in the tank for a couple weeks (cabomba and marsilea are pretty much taking over!). I'll have to get some...
I used to have some GBRs back when i was 18 and i managed to get them to breed then, also had Agassizi back then in a separate tank which also bred. I think dwarfs are a really rewarding fish to keep. Theyre really friendly and full of character.
I think this pair my be alright but ill be...
if they breed then great, but its not the goal. I only wanted a pair as i was hoping for more natural behaviours and colours from the fish! Hopefully in time the male will become a bit more vibrant. Hes definitely the more friendly of the 2 and is interested in the goings on outside of the tank.
Hi guys, bought a pair of Apistogramma Macmasteri yesterday from rats, cats and elephants and i was pretty sure i managed to pick out a male and a female from the group they had. However, now ive had them in the tank for 24 hours the fish i thought to be female has developed really bright yellow...
the marsilea is fine with the corys... however its hit and miss. some of the marsilea is yellowing and the rest of it is a lush, vibrant green. I am wondering if my lighting is too much for it! Theres always some problem or another!
That is the question.... ive contemplated all sorts of ways i could do a DIY external filter and ive come across a way i think would work for my 60l tank, theres one problem however.... can i be bothered to plan it, source all the parts and then build the bugger? Ive figured i could make one...
Ive commited to trying marsilea for now as i managed to get some quite cheap. However if it fails ill be contemplating stauro or even quarantining the corys in a seperate tank until i can get a little carpet working.
ET was voted 8th best LFS in the UK by PFK Mag and the best in Devon/Cornwall... its small but definitely worth the look, nice range of trops, colds and marines. Its opposite the Morrisons on Outlands Road.
Not from plymouth but have family down that way, i popped into the P@H when i was last down there. Thats the one just off Exeter street yeah? I thought their plants didnt look too bad but i was dissapointed in the information that the fish guy was giving to other customers about plants, stock...
i just ordered from aqua essentials and the plants were terrific. Ludwigia Repens Rubin, Hygrophilia corymbosa Thailand, Marsilea Crenata and an Anubias Nana (that was 2.99 special offer... chuffed) all arrived the following morning and look pretty damn fantastic.
not sure if this will violate the t&cs but im sure the post will get ripped down if it does.
basically i have just ordered a regulator from co2 art. Im not sure if any of you guys are looking to buy regs or co2 equipment any time soon but if you do and you arent already an account holder with...
so basically im trying to do this on a budget and have decided i need some help answering a couple of questions...
would this ... Co2 Regulator Single Pressure Manometer for Aquarium R4 | eBay fit a FE?
also would i be able to fit a solenoid at a later date to the item? ive just found that...
So can you order specific plants direct from tropica? I've not bought their stock before and have basically just gone into local shops or bought the odd bit on ebay. Had a look at their distributors and it seems like my 2 closest are pets at home (not gonna go there... not since the last time)...
It definitely looks good to me. I have not bought from tropica as of yet but do they give instructions about how to plant different species with each parcel do you know?
i like both of these, but im looking to keep the carpet under 3-4cm if i can. i think the pruning id have to do to the tenellus would kill it off.
how tall does the hirsuta grow? i see quotes saying 10cm in places but cant tell if thats horizontal or vertical growth.
As for the elatine...
So ive tried HC and my corys think its a lovely soft cushion for them to sit on and destroy so i need some help with my carpet regarding something hardy, attractive and easy to grow.
The corys do have a nice big open section at the front of the tank with plenty of places to hide and plenty of...
Not after Discus just yet, used to keep and breed them a few years ago in my late teens but had a big tank failure (my filters and tanks were interconnected at the time) and my entire stock wiped out. At the minute im just taking it slowly with a 60l and if i get the job im going for ill likely...
It may be worth removing the lemons in the mean time if you have another tank you can set up. Its definitely worth saving the fry, even if its financial. Im sure there are plenty of LFSs that will buy a few discus off you if you get regular spawns, i know that if i had a larger tank id...
Has anyone done a veg filter with say, tomatoes with the roots in the water? Just wondering if that nutrient rich water (which i use to water my plants outside after a water change) would be able to grow something edible. Basically a bit like hydroponics?
Are the thermofilters worth the money? seriously contemplating getting an inline heater when i upgrade to an external filter but ive been looking at these and they seem a bit more expensive than buying the 2 seperately. Im definitely trying to hide all the equipment i can and this does seem like...
Looks nice. For a decent smaller red plant try alternanthera Reineckii... its a medium difficulty plant and can be bright bold and bright with its pink colours. Looks a bit like a Crpyt but with pruning can be extremely bushy... Its a personal favourite of mine and ive just added the mini...
Not 100% sure but it looks like a type of Killifish to me. Not an expert on Killis and i have never kept them although i did see a rather nice one at Rats, Cats and Elephants the other day in Capel St Mary.
If people on here cannot help try the aquarium subreddit on Reddit.com. Some useful...
So i have very minor problems with algae in my tank for the most part. I get brown diatoms every few weeks for about 2 days and then they disappear again (testing is still inconclusive here as to why it happens) and apart from what i believe to be stag algae thats the only problem i really get...
I think with the correct flow and outlet placements you could get a nice circular flow going, definitely. You may have to use some of the decor and foliage to help achieve it but that could just make for some very interesting and different layouts.
River set up would definitely be my take on...
is there a way of splitting the inflow for the filter? By that i mean have a t-section on the pipe, have 2 seperate outlets, 1 at an end the other halfway down... that way there is a better flow of water.
As for aquascaping i would say a good idea would be to go diagonally across the floor...

Aquarium CO2 Regulator with Solenoid Magnetic Valve | CO2Art.co.uk - CO2 Aquarium Specialists
any idea if this will be perfect for a 5kg FE? (i got a 5kg for a steal from a shop closing down for £5.50!!!!)
I like the streamline look of it and it seems less chunky than the other regs ive seen.
Im not sure if someone can back me up on this as ive only kept clown and kuhli loaches in the past but im pretty sure that you can give them a diet of spirulina algae wafers and they should be alright. I would not take this advice unless someone else can back me up on this as theyre not a...
just had a look on their site... these are stunning...
New Variety Ramirezi Red Devil Ram PAIR Exclusive t - Detailed item view - Rare Aquatics South American Tropical Fish Specialist
I used to frequent RCE alot when i started out my discus tank years back as i liked some of the dither fish they had. I remember buying my first rummy noses from there. Not a bad little shop. Ive been meaning to have a look at Viking aquatics in ipswich as well. As for me, im happy with the otos...
well ive been unbothered about it since not long after it went in. Plus with it being so ragged it looks... unkempt. lol. definitely would prefer to get HC in there instead.
Oh ok. in that case i will clear it out. Bought it having been told it was DHG but if someone else can confirm the above then itll definitely be stripped out.
So i could do it without the timer should i chose to manually operate it? Ill probably get a solenoid reg as i have a tendency for laziness at times so having it auto run would be perfect.
so theres a picture of the DHG there. if the link works... the first few shots are the current lay out of the tank. im halfway through stripping back the JM on the driftwood as it was mostly dead. might leave the odd bit on to see if it will take again. contemplating moving what i think is baby...
So my DHG has been in the tank for about 6 weeks now and there are the odd shoots coming up here and there in the substrate, however, i really like the idea of switching to HC. As there are only clumps of DHG with the occasional single blade popping up would it be too difficult to rip out...
so what would not having the solenoid do? would it be a big problem? and ive seen a couple things with magnetic solenoids on them... is that just an attachement to put a solenoid on or a whole different type all together?
its that bloody solenoid! doubling the price! haha.
Co2 Dual Gauged Magnetic Valve SOLENOID Regulator Manometer for Aquarium Plant | eBay is much more suitable then? cheapest i can find with a solenoid on ebay.
As far as i can remember (i was going to do this with our royal), the plants are a big breeding ground for bacteria to fester. Plus it makes any cleaning up ALOT more difficult. Plus the plants (depending on what they are) will not last too long with a snake laying on top of them. Best bet is...

it reccomends using it with 2 bottles, one baking soda the other citric acid. i guess something sturdier would be needed?
EDIT: disregard. Ive seen how this would NOT be suitable.
I may have to give it a gander then! definitely something to think about... Now to convince the missus that what we really need is for me to spend more money! haha.
