mmm salicylic acid is for all intents and purposes aspirin(derived from the bark of a tree),if it is proven to be a good algae remover i'd just desolve a few in water and bung it in the tank and not bother paying silly money for a proprietary brand.

i know the plant looked great when i first purchased it now the leaves are mahoosive and could'nt hold up if i took one from the tank and tried to keep it as a sort of house plant misting etc.

theres no need at all to use methylene blue as its mainly(correct me if i'm wrong)an anti fungicide.i used it a few years ago to prevent fungus on corrie eggs,bleach will do the job just fine just rinse well.

it does'nt matter where i put the cucumber they alway's find it so you could hang it out of the way(i hang mine at the front so i can watch them squabble over whichever piece)as its in the tank as a food item it does'nt distract from the tank as it can simply be removed for the sake of photo's...

you could always try putting a couple of slices of cucumber in the tank.my two bristle noses were having a beanfeast on my plants but they pretty much leave them alone now.

i have a water but(well a disused pond filter)that is full of green water and loads of critters in it mozzie lava etc,it has'nt been used with the pond for years would it be safe to use these as live food in my tank?.

well i've got every thing now except it seems my defusor came with a pipe for use with a welder and as such i need to come up with a way to reduce the width of the pipe from the regulator to the bubble counter no biggy though.i've had to spend the weekend sorting out the stream for the pond so...

i'd keep it simple,ug filter,gravel and either plastic or bullet proof plants and really hardy fish,and oh yeah hide the fish food :wink: .

no i never use cold water,i use the mixer tap to get it as close to the required temp(usually around 25 degrees c),dunno what happens but i clean all the glass and after a couple of day's she seems to fatten up then she's off eggs everywhere.

It just strikes me as odd that there is no mature male capable of fertilising the eggs as all they end up as is free food for the other tank mates.

every time i clean my tank my adult female cory goes around depositing eggs everywhere,i would'nt mind if there was a male to fertilise them but she just sticks them everywhere.i have just recently added some juveniles that i hope may breed at some stage... i'm not complaining but it just seems odd.

if no water changes are being performed i would think that the build up of fish waste and plant matter would be sufficient for the plants,but would probably be a good idea to reduce the amount of c02 for the duration of your trip. just a thought.

i love this thread,i've never used a test kit and just relied on how my fish look,if they look healthy then all is well if not then water changes are the way forward.i have'nt gone into ferts etc because i've never gone deep into keeping plants but i guess the same applies.

Oh yeah My tanks 48"x15"x15" I've had it around ten years old and its made by jewel. I have some bog wood and rocks that I think will work well together.
