have you thought instead about a small internal? - will have less flow and some filtration ability.. or just a small pump

tetratec ex1200 mate. cant ever have enough filtration.

however, if they are saying that there is alot of detritus on the substrate, perhaps something larger with more 'suck' to it, will help clear that up, along with a good gravel vac.

sucking air is a harder problem to solve, you need to work out where its sucking the air from and then either replace the part/seal or post up your problem. noise wise, you can sit the filteron something flat and cushy, like a folded towel, off cut of carpet etc to reduce some of the vibrations.

i dont really see the point. people go to alll this expense to have 'invisible' filter pipes and yet they then wack a couple of great big black koralias in there...... most peoples lily pipes soon get filthy and look a mess anyway. mine included. :oops:

yep a TT 1200 or a JBL cristal profi e1500 but i think you will be hard pushed to get one of those. perhaps a second hand fx5 for uber turnover?

and you have 1 less thing visually in the tank apart from the tiny 1" bit that is part of the plastic bit that hooks over the edge of the tank. a good shout! i quite like the FX5 design with two jet nozzles.

typically on a ex1200 i use 3 sections of spraybar. i find this gives enough water velocity and keeps flow up.

the better filters to go for are eheim fluval (newer models fair better, than the old '05 series) Fx5 is awesome. tetratec hold the mid ground then below you have Atman Aquapro all pond solutions filters Sunsun. (basically all the same filters in essence) but if you are on a budget they...

i have spoken to many aquarists who now swear by the A.P.S filters. even after a year or two of running. im not sure you would need a UV light in the planted tank game though!

i would avoid the eheim ecco series. i believe they were not built by eheim themselves, so they quality is lacking. have heard many reports of them falling apart. £84.99 is not that cheap. i would have opted for 'all pond solutions' filters. the ones that are a TT copy...

if i were you i would go for the JBL series filters (many on here recommend them) and get them from zooplus. but purchase 2 filters so you have a backup or a 'redundant system' you will get better flow, clean them alternately, and if you do have any problems you are not up the preverbial creek.

hi all, im getting really annoyed with tetra's external filter range now and will not buy them again. i used to swear by them but have had more problems than you can shake a stick at over the last year. where the inlet comes out of your tank and joins to the hose, the little screw thread...

just clean 1/2 the media at a time in old tank water (not under the tap) or you remove the juwel filter which is dead easy and get an external filter to suit. externals are far far better.

would be nice if you can get a cheap chinese style external that does about 300-350LPH instead of having to fork out for an eden one. i currently use a HOB filter, which whilst i like it, i have to keep the tank topped up, or its like having a water fall in my living room! also media space...

so the cheap chinese things are only 200lph? i use a Azoo mignon 240 at the moment, and the flow is just about okay at the moment. could have done with 250-300lph really.

with regard to the cheap chinese one you bought steve, do you have a clue if it would fit an arc tank. with a width of 12 inches (for the spraybar) (i.e would it fit in that gap) depth of 11 inches (for the inlet) those measurements are from the top of the glass obviously not the water line...

are they leaking from the motorhead area? ort from a crack in the actual cannister?

filtration is different from flow. i find that fish cope with high levels of flow from filters, but struggle more agains the precise flow of koralias. obviously by upping the flow (you can get a filter and have both), better filtration and flow if you are using a spraybar, the fish will be...

ahh i will explain. im still going to use both sets of spraybars from both my 1200's, i just want to join them up, instead of having 2 seperate ones. The spraybar will be able to handle the volume for sure, its just whether i break the filters. :(

normally you can move them, so the unit can be at the surface with all the other 'clutter' but facing downwards at a diagonal. it all depends on where your CO2 is comming in from. (a pic of your tank would be good) you want it to optimaise the co2 circulation. My guess is that if the 1200's...

on the smaller models (compact) like the 1000 the intake is a small grill so you cant add tubing on, whereas the outtake is fine to fit 16mm tubing on i believe. The bigger models such as the 3000 does away with the intake grill i believe.

i had one on a rio 240, it did the job really well, i had to use it as i had small dainty fish, otherwise i would have gone froa koralia 1. The nano is superb.

its not all about having plants swyaing like a maniac. mine dont sway but i have a current that runs along the back left to right. and then a small koralia nano pointing at the foreground. as long as nutrients can flow around the tank and you have no visible obstructions you should be fine...

thats wierd because mine is much nearer the 700lph mark. where did you test it? is the filter below the tank? if so by how much?

tetratecs for me again. eheims are fine, but avoid the thermo and especially ecco filters.

i just use an eheim compact pump. it has suckers so i stick it on the side when i do a W/C. then attach some hose and pump the water to the drain. then i use it to pump water from a large 80L bin back into the tank. Easy peasy.

they are really a last resort as they are not cheap just for some filter caps! plus another member hasnt recieved his yet after ordering...

mine holds two. so does my ex 700. i think with mine i got three sponges. one is a coarse, one a medium and one more fine. i have the coarse and then medium in the bottom tray to remove large particles. then the fine sponge, with some bio media. then some more bio media andm finally some floss.

if you look on ebay, you can get (for example) an AquaPro 1 and an AquaPro 1SP the SP is a better more powerful model which i belive is newer.

i have the aquapro filters but make sure you get the 'SP' models as they are alot better. mine are still running quietly.

i have a TT EX700 + FE in one and a TT EX1200 in the other. although im guessing my cabnet is a tad bigger. my tank is 122cm long. but it does have a shelf between the 2 cabnets.

could you fit two filters in there? two EX700's would do the job. and you would have a redundant system.

so i should be ok then, as i only have to pump about 120cm up. if it doesnt quite make it i can also sit the ucket on a step stool or a small chair. i dont want to go down the python route as i have wierd taps and plus it look complicated (i know it seems simple, but i normally louse everything up)

i have heard many problems about this filter as it was not made by eheim but a seperate sub-contractor if you like. Many people have said the usual eheim quality has slipped on this filter due to the Sub contractor. however, this doesnt mean that yours will be bad. :)

i have 2 filters on my rekord 120. intakes at each end and at the left side on the back i have a spraybar and the right side at the back i have a plastic lilly pipe outlet type thing which pushes the water past my heater and is better for flow lower down in the tank. i havent modded the hood at...

i have not had a problem with mine. it is only a few, i would run it in sitting in a large bucket and monitor it for the first couple hours.

just to let you know, the eheim ecco is not made by eheim. it is made by a sub contractor and that is why many many people have had problems with them. poor quality.

cheers for the help mark. my buckets hold 15L. but i would turn the pump on, drain most of the water from the bucket, untill the pump is no longer underwater and then pour the last bit in. then i would switch it off and then fill the bucket up again, or i could already be filling the 10L bucket...

right, i have these opinions on filters. they may not be anyone elses but these are my opinions. 1) for a tank your size, i would have a redundant system going, I.E run two filters capable of doing your tank on their own. perhaps look a two TT EX1200'S or 1 1200's and 1 700. 2.) tetratecs...
