Moving house and moving tank - Tips needed

I will do you a swap I am moving and will have a Juwel Vision 450l to move! I am low tech so don't have CO2 etc to worry about. I think I am going to bag all my fish and put them in poly boxes. I will not feed them for a couple of days to try and stop them fouling their bag water quite as...

Advice on Moving Filter & Fish to New Tank

Yep just a bottle with the neck cut off and inverted. I think I removed the very narrow part of the neck due to the size of the fish I was trapping. I added a string to it so I could just pull it up out of the tank too. I managed to catch my blue phantom in the bottle trap. Needless to say...

Advice on Moving Filter & Fish to New Tank

I personally would use at least half the old water maybe more as the fish are used to the conditions. When I did my last tank swap I used around 300l old tank water and 100 - 150 treated tap water. The settling period depends on how well you fill the tank and whether you make it really murky...

PFK Article On Soil Substrate Planted Tanks

I would say the number of planted articles and features has been steadily growing. I have a huge interest in fish and plants so I enjoy reading it. Plus the wife buys it for me from work and gets 20% discount! Andy

    New Tank

This seems very complicated compared to photobucket. One click and paste into my thread and it is done. I really like the progression of the tank. The last image looks great with the contrast of the fish against the green. Andy

    Time when lights switch on

Mine are on at 16.00 and off at 10.00. This means I always get to see the tank no matter when I am working. I keep the photo period fairly short as I am low tech and have 2 54W T5's with reflectors. Andy

Borderline rip down - advice needed please!

When I seeded my new Fx5 from the juwel internal I chopped up all 3 blue sponges in a bucket of tank water (one coarse and two fine sponges) and put them into my bottom bio media basket with my ceramic rings and a few spare ones in with the pre filter. After a couple of month's I took it out...

    Discussion: High end 'v' affordability

I have to say I agree with Whitey. You can save up if you really want high end stuff or you can set your budget lower and shop around. There is always second hand bargains to be had if you look for them, and how many people have swapped, traded and sold excellent equipment and plants here on...

    P@H cube

Thanks Ady I don't know much about HOB's so I will check that out. I had been looking on Freshwater shrimp's site. I really like the look of the Rilli shrimp but will need to research them first. It will be my first time keeping any type of shrimp so I don't want them to be too tricky with...

    P@H cube

I am agreeing with that Ady but the green light has been issued. The other half works for P@H so I can get one of their cube tanks for peanuts. At the moment I am thinking EBI substrate, a TMC mini LED and either a Dennerle Eckfilter or HOB filter. Shrimp wise I am thinking something not too...

    P@H cube

Hey guys, I may have just got the wife's green light on a shrimp tank!! :D What are the dimensions and volume of the larger P@H cube? is it 25l volume? I want to start working out substrate volume and pricing up what I need to buy! Andy

Hypothetically, if you could choose only one..

I would definitely have Crypt Wendtii brown, and I would have to have L270 chocolate Zebra plec. I could not own tanks without a plec! Andy

How often do you replace your heaters?

Sorry I wasn't completely clear as I was also meaning that the heaters wouldn't have to work as hard to maintain the temp as well. There is still the risk of over heating but with my volume of water it wont change as quick as a smaller tank. Thanks for the compliment. Andy

    Disaster

Hey I checked with my wife who works for P@H if you take it back even without the receipt they will exchange it like for like or put your money back on to a P@H gift card. She also said if you call the store you bought it from and explain what happened they should be able to exchange it when...

How often do you replace your heaters?

In my Juwel 450 Vision I run 2 Juwel heaters in an attempt to keep a more even temperature. If one fails I then have a back up. As they are Juwel ones I can run them vertically in the tank and hide them next to my Fx5 inlet and outlet so they don't stand out too much. Andy

    Feeding Tetramin flakes/any flakes

Sorry mis understood originally I thought you were using a bloodworm based tab and not granules but I still may have to look into the granules though. They certainly like the meaty foods like mussel etc. What types of plec are you keeping?

    Feeding Tetramin flakes/any flakes

Hey Dean would you recommend the new era tabs? I have 7 plecs and I will need to buy some more food soon. Does it break down quickly? what sort of size are the tabs?

    Feeding Tetramin flakes/any flakes

I feed flake to distract the greedy Congo's so I can get the wafers down to the bottom for the plecs. Now these are fish that go crazy for surface food and more than once I have ended up with a wet face from them. Andy

    New plant treatment

I just rinse mine under the tap and give them a quick visual inspection, but I do not keep any inverts at all. It would depend on the source of the plants as it has been reported that a lot of Asian plants have been sprayed with insecticides and pesticides causing shrimp wipe outs. European...

    Should I, Shouldn't I

Surely this is the wrong place to be asking if you should buy another tank as the answer would be yes. So by this logic you really wanted the tank anyway sub-conciously knowing the answer you would get? Of course you need another tank and at that price

    Definative answers are they possible?

In my low tech 450l sand bottomed tank I do fortnightly water changes of around 20-25%. I clean the Fx5 monthly. I have a fairly high fish load as I have said before with plecs, congo's and a few other fish. The tank is now fairly heavily stocked with easy to grow plants e.g crypts, anubias...

    Clean freak!

If you want to vacuum without removing water you can get air pump driven gravel vacuums that don't remove water. Algarde make one that was stocked at PAH and there are probably many other brands and LFS that do them. I have never used them so no idea how good they are. Might be worth a look...

    Clean freak!

This is what I have been trying to do with my tank a 450l Juwel vision. I have no CO2 or fertiliser addition (other than root tabs). I do 25% water change every two weeks, and open the filter once a month. I have no real algae issues except a little spot or two on the glass. this is more...

Why is the Aquatics Industry so small? (UK)

Do you have a nutritious substrate that is capped in your tank? One thing that isn't mentioned in the info on L134 plec's is that they like to dig. Mine dig under my wood hardscape and make caves to sit in using their tail and fins. It isn't an issue for me as I have plain old sand but if you...

Why is the Aquatics Industry so small? (UK)

I will try and get some pics soon. I am trying to set up a breeding colony but haven't got a mature male yet. The ones at Amwell are cheaper than both local MA's who have them at £75 each. Prices have spiked due to import restrictions. I actually had 3 and then got 2 mature females for £60...

Why is the Aquatics Industry so small? (UK)

You have MA Cambridge at Coton inside the Polhill garden centre which is the one near the Madingley American cemetry, the other is Maidenhead scotsdales in Great Shelford at the Scotsdales garden centre. I personally prefer the Scotsdales store. Andy

How much time do people spend actually watching their tanks?

Re: How much time do people spend actually watching their ta Tend to spend 30-60mins at least in the evenings while the wife is watching tv. Sometimes on the sofa from a distance sometimes on a foot stall nice and close. Really like to watch when the veggies are in for the plec's. Most of...

    Pathogen or toxin? And remedy.

Plants dying and rotting in newly setup vision 260

I have a vision 450 as well and I believe the Vision 450 and the Vision 260 are both supplied with the 1000LPH pumphead so this would not increase the flow. You can buy a 1500LPH pump head from LFS / Ebay but I think they are about 1/3 the price of a reasonable external filter so are quite...
