    As Kris says but use a smaller diameter hose to get a lower syphon volume. I would have thought this would still be enough to remove most detritus and mulm and bits of plant and slower at removing the water. Andy

    Jewel filters work from the top down on the sponge side as the fine poly pad is on the top for debris removal and the pump draws from the second box and pushes the water back out into the tank. Andy

    That's very impressive Ian. I got a 2nd hand JBL I think it was the e900 and fitted it to the mother in law's tank and I was very impressed with it. They seem very well made filters. Andy

    Setup on 2 canisters

    I personally would set both up to carry out both tasks so if one ever stopped while you were out or away then you would still have both types of filtration even if it was less effective than before.

    From my experience those internal Juwel filters clogged very easily so would not clean nowhere near as good as the JBL. The posts from the guys above make sense and what you are seeing is an improvement in flow relating to the filter "finding" hidden detritus. Andy
