I’m sure you are like most of us and hate being in poor health at anytime but we just have to relax best we can and heal, so do not try to do anything that may hinder your healing but sit in the sun and enjoy the view and watch the wildlife which you have welcomed into your home

Perhaps there needs to be more plants and hiding places for the tadpoles so whatever is catching them has a much harder job
But only a very small % survive anyway to keep everything in balance

You can use anything you want
It makes no difference
I would suggest having some holes in it so if you have to lift it out it drains so it’s not too heavy to move

I want to try and grow some of these next year
I fell in love with them on holiday in 2014 but haven’t had the space for them yet

You can try the paint
It may stick to the wood or it may not you will have to test it

Even goldfish need 36”
Unless you remove the fish during the winter months
A bottom drain is not overkill
Yes it has to go somewhere
They are not expensive use 2” on small ponds...
What’s SWA ?
Should be able to pick up a skimmer from any decent koi place
I’ve used one in the past with a floating weir on it
Worked a treat as I had a separate pump on it just with a Venturi return to add extra flow
The filter was fed from bottom drains for most of the year then in winter...
The only problems with mixing twin tail and single tail goldfish together are the single tailed ones are much quicker to the food so you have to make sure they all get enough
The worst problem is if the twin tailed fish are female then they can easily be pushed around by single tail males...
Re: help setup my first pond
If you are going to keep fish in it over winter I'd remove the pump and run a small air pump having the airstone about 6 inches below the surface not on the bottom so an aquarium air pump will do or at least raise the pond pump off the bottom as much as possible and...
Re: help setup my first pond
Instead of trying to hang the baskets why not just buy taller baskets ?
You can use anything that gives you the right height ie plastic buckets or bins,
You've gone completely OTT with pump and filter, whoever sold it you should be ashamed
The pond is too shallow...
