Do you have any growth issues ?
Some people do use root tabs but most people who use EI ferts don't bother.
Osmacote has been popular with low tech guys who use a sprinkle of loose grains over the floor when first setting up and I have read about guys freezing little blocks to insert into the...
That is a spectacular substrate mix!
One bubble per second does not sound like much for 30 gallons, it might well be enough but I would be double checking that one point drop!
Why not just use the tried and tested EI fertiliser method ?
I have never had any real issues with them but several times the package has arrived with a note saying Guernsey customs have opened and re sealed the package! They are obviously suspicious of white power being sent in the post!
Wow you have lots of patience... lots if not most folk who keep planted tanks will plant the tank from day one and start the ferts straight away as well.
You can dose your ferts as soon as the tank is planted but dont forget it is not a good idea to add any fish until you have your C02 on song...
Looks good for the time being, be very careful increasing from this point, perhaps concentrate or seeing what the plants do and if you can improve flow patterns and keep up or even step up maintenance.
See what happens over a few days or a week.
There does seem to be a bit more potential for...
OK that is cool, you must do what you feel comfortable with just bear in mind that every inch of pipe will reduce flow and any fitments in line will also do the same.
The best method that I used incorporated a cut down plastic bottle and a small ceramic diffuser.
For many years I just fed the...
I know but you can take it out of the line and place it in front of your pump,
You may well will get better flow and a smoother run without the atomiser in line and even better diffusion and even some completely dissolved C02.
It is just an idea although quite a few guys do use this method, it...
Ok well you can certainly try to locate the atomiser directly in front of you pump that might give you better results very quickly.
Is does not need to be plumbed in just sited as close as possible to the inlet.
So where exactly is the atomiser placed, is it feeding all the gas directly into the pump?
The PH testing needs to be quite extensive, start testing just before the CO2 comes on and every hour until it goes off.
It is really worth the effort but make sure you write it all down so any changes can...
Hi Kieth, 400lt is never going to be easy to get right without a bit of trial and error but definitely possible and you now have the backing of people who have mastered the art!
Starting with your opening question though, as long as you formula is correct then EI wont be the problem.
In my...
Hi john, you don’t need to worry about testing, that is one of the main points about dosing with the EI method.
Most test kits will give you more headaches than true readings anway!
You just follow the recipe and don’t worry about if you have enough of everything because you will.
Now getting...
I have worked on a few big tanks, the biggest one that I actually built, was a 2000 gallon commercial display tank.
Another one was a private 800 gallon reef tank. In both instances the tanks were built in situ useing steel & concrete with acrylic front and side viewing.
What are your tanks...
Great project, good luck with all the planning.
I would think a motorised reactor useing a separate venturi pump to spin the water would work well.
Everything will be in giant scale... great fun to build...
I really think you should reduce your ferts & see what happens.
That might be the only way to discover for yourself, because there will always be conflicting advice out there.
What is the worst that can happen?
I am sure everyone on this forum will be interested with your results.
Personally I...
I think you will find a lot of people who will disagree with your links but, I think you should go with your feelings and if you want to use less ferts you should do just that.
This subject is quite a hot topic and can be found on mutable threads throughout the forum pages.
Fantastic tree, very hard to kill (unless you keep it inside) very easy to care for. Yes you can use your water change water if you like but there are other methods that might work better for you depending what you want from your tree....
I have been using standard EI fertilisation for many years, it has been successful & easy enough, however I was wondering about something.......
Every year I have several emersed tanks growing around my house and in the garden, I have featured them many times on this forum.
The growth in...
Most folk use the estimated index system = EI.
There are hundreds of threads on here about using EI, a few people find some reason not to use the method but generally speaking it is a very popular and safe method that will guarantee that your plants receive every single fert there require...
You are very right there, especially between the American & the English forums that I read!
It can get really frustrating when folk quote from one forum to another.
Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.
You have to much light for the amount of C02 available, the easy way is to knock off two tubes.
You fish might thank you too.
Possibly, as Co2 is an extremely fickle component to get right & the descending roots could upset flow for instance, but not in the context of consuming excess Co2.
A single mature peace lily properly has more mass than the all my underwater plants put together ... however I have about 5 in my tank & numerous other terrestrial plants but I still sick to the basic EI recipe & don't seem to have any deficiency issues.
Poor Victor! I am so sorry for all the confusion :(
It would seem people think your PH controller is fine :) so please ignore my post (I cant delete them).
Perhaps follow Geoff's advice.....
Lets hope your better lighting will help.
Yes Hoggie, I have tried a couple of times, once on a new tank & once on a mature tank & I have also used one on a reef tank to dissolve calcium.
The first time on a new tank was a disaster but the controller was of poor quality so I splashed out on a new one & set it up on a nice one year old...
The point is PH controllers work by measuring the PH within a certain range .. ie the Co2 will come on when the PH probe is set to 6.5 & then the C02 stops when the PH reaches say, 6.4.
Unfortunately this leaves loads of times when there is no C02 going in & times when it is pouring in so you...
Victor has another similar thread started elsewhere on the forum My light is correct? | UK Aquatic Plant Society
I have already pointed out he needed more Co2 to match the light & I now see Victor has changed the light but, still uses a PH controller!
If Mark is right in that Neutro+ is the same recipe as standard EI then you can does 5 x without harming anything & I have read up to 10 x is still safe but, the whole point is, EI at standard rates, is slightly more that can be used in 7 days & guaranties the plants have more than adequate...
Well I don't know anything about Neutro+ but I know that if you follow any basic EI recipe you will be completely covered on the fert front & save money too!
Once you get the EI going you can concentrate on C02 - flow as that is virtually always the problem.
The whole point of EI is based around not having to worry about it!
All the basic recipes are more than adequate to fertilise your plants, there are not secrete ingredients, no need to add extra anything just dose & don't worry :)
Well without a bit more info it is not so easy to say but assuming you have a medium size tank with C02 injection the Started kit is by far the best value.
Hi Mr ER man, we do have experts only too willing to share there knowledge on this forum, not many secrets around at the moment.
Do you have a picture of your tank, it sounds nice?
I would be more concerned about keeping the tank topped up than dosing, personally I just get someone to feed the fish 3 x a week & forget the ferts.
Dropping the light period 0r even better the intensity & keep the feeding down because there wont be any water changes. The tank should be fine.
Well as we all know BC are only a guide but 3 x BPS seems very low to me!
You have 4 x T5s & 8 hours of light, for that amount of light you are going to be needing loads of C02!
On a similar theme I have found this years extremely wet season has had an interesting effect on several of my trees!
My green beech, for example, has much bigger leaves this year, i wonder if this has anything to do with the rain water?
I am not sure what you are tying to achieve?
Why not a low tech tank without injected C02?
Plantbrain recently wrote ....
"Adding CO2 will lower the threshold of the LCP(light compensation Point where PS = R), so contrary to belief, CO2 allows you to add even LESS light, than non CO2. This is...
What I see in my tank every day, are the plants pearling or producing bubbles from the leaves & stems, what I see after a large water change is a lot more of the same effect?
Hi Matty, that is interesting & quite contradictory to what I have read numerous times on different forums including this one!
So the plot thickens...... :?
Another observation - withing an hour after lights on, after a large water change, the plants will pearl like no other day.
I believe this to be due to the additional C02 contained in the fresh tap water?
I have no scientific evidence or explanation, I have read several thousand threads on various forums though! :?
It would seem that regular large water changes are effective, whatever the reasons.
I could say that this only seems to apply to high energy tanks with fast growing plants & with...
I have kept potted trees & shrubs for over 30 years & own a large collection but, it has only been for the last three years, since I discovered - chicken sh.t!
I have found this to be a great source of root nutrition & although I accept the possible variables depending on the chickens diet, the...
Hi Pete, welcome to the forum.
Have a good look at the tutorials you may be very surprised about the water parameters we favour!
Nitrate - I love it LOL
Cheers mate, it was not actually me who needed the info but I was sent a pm asking for a chart & I could not find anything via the search button - should be a sticky thread on this me thinks?
Re: Wanting to start EI dosing using solutions and dosing pu
Andy you might find something of help here http://ukaps.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=915 as the measurements are in grams
Re: Wanting to start EI dosing using solutions and dosing pu
That's cool Andy - I was mixing & dosing alternate days right up to a few months back & that worked well too.
I must say however, none of my plants tanks have ever been so lush & green as this one is now :)
Re: Wanting to start EI dosing using solutions and dosing pu
Are yes good point mate however this is the link I posted http://www.aquariumplantfood.co.uk/prod ... product=82 a forum sponsor who does all the mixing & dosing calculations for you :D
Maybe not the cheapest option but I have been...
Re: Wanting to start EI dosing using solutions and dosing pu
Andy, CJ has made a fantastic post for you but, you can make it even simpler by using an all in one mix & dosing 6 days a week - I have already posted a link on your other thread :)
Re: easycarbo and tpn+ doseage 300l tank
Hi Alan, I have read a few of you post - can I ask why you are not interested in using a pressurised Co2 system?
However there are a few plants that are generally referred to as fully aquatic (at least on this type of forum) - for example - Tropica grow virtually all their plants in an immersed state but, vallis is grown submersed?
There are only a few totally aquatics plants anyway!
If it helps I have been dosing 10ml a day in my 150l tank for about two months.
Not because I had an algae problems but, because I was given some for Christmas last year (2009) & thought I better try it out.
My tank looks nice & healthy &...
Thanks for your detailed reply - i have been using dry fert mixes for a few years now, before that (for about 25 years) I was using various methods but, i was just wondering about other folk who might prefer to use pre mix?
Do you get good results?
Sorry if i am starting back at the beginning but can I please ask a few questions.....
What is TMG?
Will there still be a 50% weekly water change?
If I dont add the GH booster will the mix ratios still be the same for the other two powders & will it be OK to admit the GH?
Can anyone tell me where I can buy small accurate measuring spoons, I want to dose my tank directly with dry powder but I cant find 1/8th or 1/16th measures anywhere?
