The mysterious case of the melting frogbit

You sure snails don't eat salvinia too (click to zoom, then click to zoom again)? 2012-8-16_20.22.57 by hotweldfire, on Flickr BTW have a look at my anubias nana petite. Keep in mind this is growing under my mass of needle leaf java fern, i.e. pretty much in the dark, so it's nutrient/co2...

The mysterious case of the melting frogbit

Ok, thanks Darrel. That makes me feel slightly better as was getting very concerned about what was going on with my ferts. Unfortunately it renders frogbit as a fert index useless. You think the pond snails could be doing this sort of damage to other plants in my tank? Have holes in other plants...

The mysterious case of the melting frogbit

2012-7-6_18.36.52 by hotweldfire, on Flickr Please see pic above, especially the brown leaf on left side and snail moving in to take advantage. This photo was taken at 1pm today. Lights go on at 2pm and off at 8pm. Frogbit went in at 6pm yesterday. Here's a photo tonight of a new plantlet...

Dosing a low tech 70L (more like 50L with hardscape) help?

Re: Dosing a low tech 70L (more like 50L with hardscape) hel Re TPN vs TPN+, Paulo tells me you should use both as apparently the trace elements are different in both. I'm using equal amounts in my P@H 27l low tech nano. I was dosing 1ml TPN and 1ml TPN+ on Sundays (after small water change)...

    what ferts to use?

It's what I started with and what I still use. Can't go wrong with it really.

Dosing for a Barr non-CO2 method tank

Fair point. Two reasons really. 1) Insecurity. Should something start going pear shaped in the tank it would be good to know that I have a key parameter under control and can manipulate it appropriately. So if I know I'm dosing at roughly the right level then I can up it or bring it down as...

Dosing for a Barr non-CO2 method tank

Barr/Walstad type nano (first link in my sig) with the aim of no or minimal water changes. Has been running about 4 months. Current stocking is 2 hisonotus leucofrenatus (black otos) and about 50 cherry/sakura shrimp (and some random snails). These get fed a tiny bit twice a week max. No co2...

High nitrates in remodeled tank and which fert to use

    ferts causing high nitrate!

Ta both. Have some high grade cherries including a few taiwan painted fire reds which can be a bit sensitive. Also some golden bees that are fairly high grade. Have not seen anything resembling symptoms of CO2 poisoning though. You're probably right, it's just breeders trying to play safe.

    ferts causing high nitrate!

OK, I genuinely do sympathise with the consensus on this forum about test kits. I have learnt through bitter experience that they are unreliable. However, I find myself in a very similar position as the OP as I'm using exactly the same ferts and since I've been using them my nitrate test...

    Dosing in the Dark

Thanks mate, glad I cheered you up :D The chorus is wrong though - should end with dosing in the dark. There was a serious question behind the silliness though. Have recently reduced my lighting from 12 to 8 hrs a day and have set them for 12-8 so I get to see the tank at night. This means...

    Dosing in the Dark

I get up in the morning, the lights on my tank are all off I come home in the evening, the lights on my tank are now not off Plants in my tank are tired, they're tired without their proper ferts Hey there baby, seeing my plants die really hurts I could dose in the morning, I could dose even...

    Supplementing ADA prior to EI

Thanks, good to know it's chelated trace. However I still have my ADA stuff lying around so my main question is what do I add in addition to it until it's used up? Just phosphate or should I be adding N despite my test kit readings? Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

    Supplementing ADA prior to EI

Hi, I have decided to take the plunge with EI (sort of). Have some TFF aquarium plant nutrition on its way from aquarium plant food UK. My understanding is this is equivalent to an all-in-one: NPK + trace (does it have FE BTW?) However in the meantime I have a couple of 500ml bottles of ADA...
