Garlic is recommended by some people as a natural antibiotic. Its also meant to counter act the effects of copper. Not sure if its shrimp safe so ill leave it for some more knolegeable to step in.
they wont attack healthy fish. They will learn to take the food from the surface tho.
I've seen them eat a half dead fish before. But this is because they are scavengers.
They probably came on the plants and are mostly a cosmetic problem. If you want to prevent them from hitching a lift in future you can leave you plants in a salt water bath for 10 mins before rincing and planting next time :)
Tank volume in Litres is Length (cm) * Width (cm) * Height (cm) / 1000
TDS testers are cheap. This is the one i have. Digital TDS Meter Tester Water Quality Filter Purity | eBay
For CRS its reccomended:
60L tank
External filter
Buffering Substrate ADA stuff or FloraBase
RO with Salty Bee Minerals added and a A TDS tester (£10 on eBay)
Nothing in the hardscape that will raise the pH (ie, no landscape rock)
Some plants and mosses
If you want them to breed and the...
salami is cured with nitrate/nitrite and is high in salt. That in addition to the high fat content which fouls the water - really not a good thing to feed them.
I really would recommend treating for 2 weeks - especially at 25˚C. You can ignore everyones advice but it can come back and not be visible for another week or so - and then you've dyed everything in your tank cyan for no reason. Stubborn cases can take up residence in the fishes gills and will...
Esha Exit chemically is probably OK for hardy shrimp. I wouldn't risk it with CRS tho. The stuff has methyl blue in it for one iirc. Theres a whole host of carcinogenic chemicals in it so be careful handling it.
If you want to isolate the shrimp before you treat the tank, remember that you...
They like cooler, well aerated water. The water shouldn't be hotter than 24˚C/75˚F While primarily scavengers, they will grow to about 6 inches long so anything that can fit in their claws can be considered dinner. They will probably be fine with the plec.
A few more deaths later, I've spotted some tiny white worm/leech things (about 3-7mm long tapered at both ends) in the tank. Slithering around on the driftwood etc, they might be Planaria but I'm no expert.
Do we think these are the cause of the deaths of the adults I've been having recently...
I just fished out a dying CRS today. My 2nd to last berried one :arghh:
I think the signs are pointing to this being bacterial. Does anyone know where to get Furanol in this country? Or know the brand name of a human one I could persuade a doctor to give me some of that is safe for shrimps and...
I've lost 2 more snowballs since wednesday :bawling:
Im switching over from un mineralised to mineralised RO atm - so i dont think 50% water changes daily would be good until the minerals get up a bit more in the tank, should be done with that in the next 2 weeks hopefully.
The TDS is...
They should be fine at 19 degrese. Feed them half an algae wafer or a chunk of carrot every week and that should be enough.
And yes, acclimatising them to a new tank is a good idea, be sure to acclimatise them to the water as well as the temp. (Although they are pretty hardy) You don't want to...
Thats easy, just put all females in :D Most sakura type Cherries you see in shops are all female anyway as the males are so colourless. Plus cherries are more tolerant to a wider range of environmental parameters.
The deaths seemed to start in earnest after i put the almond leaf in. But that was arround the same time that i stopped the CO2
I fed them some boiled spring greens today that they are going nuts over. Lots of calcium in it i believe.
As a last ditch attempt, I've ordered some...
Stopped the CO2 over a week ago. Temp is at 22
Pulled another dead snowball out today :bawling:. Ive stuck an air brick in today - see if that changes anything.
Dr
If your going to get lots, drive round the north circular and get them from freshwater shrimp.co.uk otherwise I know the ma at osterly has a few of each species for twice the price. Phone them before and check.
I switched to un Mineralised RO from Tap about 5 months ago.
Tomorrow ill start the transition to RO mineralised by the salty shrimp.
The Tds in my tank did keep creeping up after water changes - which i think can mostly be attributed to the landscape rock that was in there.
Theres loads of moss and a whole piece of bogwood covered in fissidens. Its hard to see in pictures, but the back of the tank has a ton of willow moss in there.
The problem is that adults are the ones snuffing it atm since i stopped the CO2 and added an almond leaf. :arghh:
Do you mean the mineralised water is the cause or the lack of it?
The test readings are before adding any minerals to the tank.
My Salty shrimp Bee shrimp GH+ arrived to day and I've added it to the barrel of RO water i just got. The barrel is in the airing cupboard coming up to a safe...
Lost another snowball shrimp.
Im not sure whats going wrong. I got the water tested today and it was pH 7, GH 7, KH 7.5 (damn you landscape rock - now removed), Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate < 20.
Im wondering if these almond leaves are to blame. :-/ They were sold as pesticide free - shrimp...
I put a few tadpoles from the pond in a 2L jar with some water, weed and some other fauna. One of which was the damson fly larvae to watch one day.
The larvae proceeded to eat almost every single one of the tadpoles it could lay its hands on. Wouldn't recommend leaving it in with your other...
humm, I've had a bit of a shrimp die off since i stopped the CO2 , 2 CRS and 3 snowballs dead. Currently waiting for the salty shrimp stuff to arrive before I change the water. The only difference was an addition of a quarter of an almond leaf and a piece of driftwood. o_O Im hoping the...
What water are you changing it with? tap or ro/distilled.
Going by the pics, the dead bodies have caused an ammonia spike. Have you put new carbon in since the genocide?
Tetra AquaSafe has stuff in it that binds to stuff (metals, nitrites) and detoxifies it - might be worth chucking some of...
I would be inclined not to change any water - just top it up with rainwater or simular - and try to have it as its own self sustaining eco system with the plants cleaning the water. Its a good idea to shove a trumpet snail in to eat the waste that the shrimp don't.
I've ordered some of the salty shrimp Bee Shrimp GH+ (the tank has a mix of CRS and Snowballs)
I suppose I'm going to have to initially slowly introduce a first dosage into the tank water over the course of a week before i start water changes again.
I have 1 shrimp in a vase with an large anubis plant that has about the same volume of water that your talking about.
Never feed it and top the water up with water from the other tanks ever now and then - he's been in there for about 4 months.
The trick is suppose is keeping the water...
you mean these things?
I put them in my pond a while ago, they breed like nobodies business.
Anyway - we digress. :P
I've ordered up some almond leaves and I've removed the CO2 (goodbye dreams of HC carpet :'( )
Im probably going to have to chuck a few more java ferns in there to...
I've removed the CO2 and I'll see how that goes - Best to change only a few parameter at a time me thinks. Ive been changing the water with RO as the tap water here is liquid limestone (300+ tds - ph close to 8, 40+ ppm nitrate).
I had some mini pellia in the tank, but it was on some landscape...
I've been having terrible luck with the survival rate of the CRS fry in my shrimp tank.
Im wondering if it has to do with the CO2 injection, as all my other parameters that i can test for a pretty much perfect (55L aquarium, tetratec 400 with intake sponge, tds 150, nitrate 5-10, nitrite...
