When I buy Buce that's grown emersed I cut the roots off as close as I can to the rhizome as they tend to rot away anyway. Some Buce have a very different root structure to others.
The one in the first in age looks like 'pink lady' which is similar to gigantea and kishii in terms of root...
Another way to 'attatch' it is to chop it up small and alow it to completely dry out, like bone dry. Most mosses will bounce back from this sort of treatment. Within hours it should be good as new :)
Welcome to the forum :)
Its been said already but the angle deffinately needs rehousing. You say 'when it gets bigger', id be questioning IF it could grow to its potential size in there. I agree he looks very healthy but the neons also look a pittle afraid of him.
EI or off the shelf macro and...
Looking much better !
I wouldnt say it was the lighting thats the issue. My 50l cube has a grand total of 5watts of led lighting over it made up of standard 5mm leds.
Have you trimmed the stems at all? Trimming them is how you get the to bush out :)
Your filter is a little underpowered but usable i would say. Is it running through a spraybar or another outlet?
Also brighty step 1 is just trace i believe, if this is the case you are lacking in macro ferts (npk).
Until you can source another fertiliser that has nitrogen potassium and...
I would save 50% of the old water then it will just be like a prolonged 50% waterchange.
It may not contain bacteria but as already said it will be less of a shock.
Does anyone remember the ukaps pico contest we did?
Id be interested in round 2 if it could be organised?
It is a competition that anyone can get involved in and cost could be as little as absolubtly nothing :)
Doesnt have to be an official contest if the owners/ founders are not interested but...
I wouldnt worry about the effects of liquid carbon on fish at the moment as you have no fish :)
Get the plants growing nicely and you cam start cutting back if you need to once you add fish.
You could use a desk lamp if you like but unless you live in a cave it is not nessecary.
Dont worry too much over it, as long as they are wet they will survive :)
There will be no problems for 3-4 days without lighting of Any kind.
Any growth may be a bit leggy but they will not suffer without lights for that length of time.
1-2-grow plants just leave them out of the water and they will have the same conditions they have Always had.
If they are emmersed...
I completely understand that in a high tech aquarium the waste of fish will be used up faster than they can build up so there is little point so i can see why they become useless in that kind of set up.
If you are doing 50% water changes daily like is widely advised i can apreciate that this...
As long as you dont have a really compact carpet i agree with garuf, if its dense like pool filter sand it will dieat the bottom and float off
How about a marimo carpet? Low tech as you can get :P
Id your sensiable with it then the surface area wont be a problem ;)
Id love a tank that sort of shape for a few discus, if it wasnt finished in the same trim as my great aunts dining room.
Hate emersed stems :D
Although as a little side project it could be a nice idea :)
I plan on sourcing some of the more unusual mosses arouund to grow emersed as a bit of a money maker.
Great method is chuck it into a blender for a bit and pour it over a tray of gravel, wait a few months and...
Im looking into what plants i can grow in the greenhouse as im moving on monday
So far ive come up with
Hairgrass verieties
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
Crypts
Swords
MOSS :D (inc. pellia etc)
Bolbitis
Java fern verieties
HC
PH
Glosso
And thats my shortlist for now :)
Im mainly going for...
I have good success with low light low tech, and fair success with high light medium tech, although i get my fare share of algae with high lighting.
I dont think its a case of high light vs low light, as both have there advantages.
Low light in general has a higher margin for error (triggering...
Been and had another look at them today.
They don't look bad in design to be honest.
inside the tray at the bottom is a handy little place you could store things and has a little built in vacuum seal pot for food.
They have also gone down to £29.99.
I should be picking one up tomorrow so ill...
I didnt take much of a look at them to be honest, ill have a closer inspection next time ;)
Although the packaging looks like it was a cut and paste job on paint.
My local PAH is selling 30cm (roughly) cubes at the minute at £39 with filter and a 9w light which i think is very reasonable!
http://www.alibaba.com/product/hk104418 ... eries.html
Not much else to say, just a heads up really :)
Ok
Best stock up guys if you have any future plans that involve the listed plants.
I dont see how water lettuce and cabomba could be an issue to our local waters. Neither of them survive outside temperatures in the winter to any extent :eh:
Its a shame when things like this happen...
Been out today and noticed that both shops I went to where still selling cabomba and elodia, and one was selling water lettuce too.
So the law states you cannot sell these plants anymore, Are we still allowed to 'give' them away to other members?
Cabomba and elodia are classic aquarium plants...
I have a very healthy looking nano which i have been putting down to reasonable.
Its about 1.5wpg, and the moss that is sat right next to the outlet needs trimming very regularly, whereas the moss further away is less often so.
I think its certainly one sort of plant that definitely benefits...
I have a black background on the tank and its very noticable :(
Ill get some pictures up asap.
I could probably make them invisible with some contrasting if thats allowed
Thanks for all the help guys, i really apreciate it.
This will be my first ever contest tank so i dont want to do...
Spot on there steve uk
My plan at the moment is for a 'gumi inspired scape with very thick and tall hairgrass in left rear corner as this may hide the tubing, but it could also loose a lot of depth and look silly
I have a problem with aga 2010.
Every tank ive seen (without fail) that has placed in the hundreds lacks any visiable equipment.
Problem i have is the tank i wish to enter is bottom drilled
This is going to hurt my chances.
No way it can be removed =[
If i did it i would do it for under £5 easily including cost of the tank (£4 including heater, filter, tank, light and a plastic skull from a boot sale, and £1 for superglue)
I have a spare tank thats begging for a paladarium set up ;)
i like the idea of a paladarium, planted entirely with uk natives :D and uk 'native' hardscape.
I disagree.
Im no expert but i have a certain ammount of knowledge.
Discus can be kept in hard tap water as long as you are sensiable and pick your discus from a good source to start.
Discus can breed in hard water, albeit with lower brood sizes, so if you could source some of these then it...
I think ill give it a try.
I deffinately wont be releasing plants into the wild, any that i ever have to throw away will be boiled or burned.
Worst thats likely to happen is a slapped wrist and a ruckus at checkin
Samc that is a genius idea :D
I got the mini mysteries home in bottled water
I might look into liscencing etc, but if i just collect tiny samples then they may aswell go in my luggage or shoes
Well I have a few trips planned for 2010 and i always find some cracking things whilst im away (got some 'mini mystery snails' from malta  )
So I was just wandering, is it in breach of any rules to bring back aquatic plants and mosses?
If so, is there any way I can make it legal...
I dont think its anything to do with the tanks....
We have a little 0ver 800 litres of water in out living room and the doors are always closed.
WE also have a full range of medications and a bottle o amonia and we are all fine :D
Ive had a couple of plant collections from java plants before.
They where in fairly good condition, a few plants suffered each time but on the whole they where very good. THey also sent another cllection a week later BOTH times, so i got 4 collections for the price of 2! I ordered 2 4 footer...
Antone thought of melting snow to use as R/O? it has the advantage of not runnoing over several surcaces to get into the rain but, but you have to collect it yourself. i have melted some and it is ph neutral so not caught up like acid rain
ill report back on how it goes anyway.
thanks for the link :D pretty much what i had in mind :D
your tank is giving me some ideas too saintly :D
So, my plan stands at P. helferi, dwarf riccia, fissidens moss and hc.
thanks :)
Maybe some hc on the rocks? (sounds like a coctail lol) and p helferie dotted around the rocks also?
im really new to the whole structured scape thing, any ideas will be much apreciated :D
