There's the caveat of solubility.The calcium (Ca++) and bicarbonate (2HCO3-) ions are exactly the same whether they came from calcium chloride (CaCl2.nH20) & potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) or both from calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
Actually, I'm using powdered CaCO3 when adding alkalinity (water gets too acidic). For a few hours, the water looks like full of smoke. It's completely harmless but I wonder what ordinary customers would say to such a reminalizer...
