    Optimising algae growth

Like your angle here. I wonder if tanks with driftwood are more prone to algae as there must be some kind of rotting/ degrading going on which could lead to its growth? My tank is over 3 years running now and i know that theres a lot of crap in the soil, that is slightly tipping the scales at...

Estimative Index, is it still relevant?

No, it's based on the "without CO2 plants will need less ferts, so instead of dosing 3x per week, I'll just do that once a week" principle. 😁

Estimative Index, is it still relevant?

am not quite sure how they came to that conclusion because algae almost require the same nutrients that plant needs. neither plant or algae would care weather the N is from Organic source or Inorganic source. the most common algae found under the EI regime is GSA and GDA, both present under...

    Undergravel filter

Possibly, but thinking about the undergravel plate I used, I think it was inadequate. It was like the Supa under gravel plate https://www.amazon.co.uk/Supa-Under-Gravel-Aquarium-Filter/dp/B003J2ULO6/ref=asc_df_B003J2ULO6/? The slots were really tiny and clogged easily. Have just set up my...

Is that based on the oft quoted 30 ppm of NO3 being "full EI" weekly? Still, 10 ppm of NO3 or about 2.25 ppm of N weekly... that is probably about twice the amount of what I dose in both my densely planted low-tech tanks every 2-3 weeks :) sure, I don't doubt it works for you. Cheers, Michael

Started as High Tech - Transitioning to Low Tech

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the Algae sub or not. This could be a non issue, I've noticed over the last number of days some hair like algae on some of my ferns, it's not on all of them and it is quite small. The photo below is zoomed right in. I have adjusted the lights to 30% with...

I think fertilization among some might just have evolved to take specific conditions into account as well as the interaction between the various compounds we dose - none of this is ever mentioned by the originators or mentioned when people discuss EI - to me EI is more of a throw...

    Optimising algae growth

I dose EI in CO2 injected tank and 1/3 EI in a not-CO2-injected tank. I don't have problems with algae in either tank. I like EI because it takes the guesswork out. No disrespect to the duckweed index, but I'd rather prevent inorganic fert problems than have to identify them after they have...

Oase vs Eheim Externals with Thermal

In my experience with 3 oase biomasters (2x 600's and 1x 350), the air purge isn't really much of an issue with the improved head design. If you're really worried about it and buy one without the new prefilter tubes, just drill some bigger holes in it. I only very rarely get air purges, and...

Do I need to increase stocking level in 30L nano tank?

I would not increase stocking in lieu of using fertilizer. That's a very roundabout way to address those needs and come with other sorts of organic waste that will encourage algae and make your life more difficult. If your plants are hungry, add a little fertilizer.

A cycled tank and a mature tank are not the same. Having the microbiota to process ammonia and nitrites is only one part of what a microbiota maturity is. It is, however, the easiest part to measure, so it is commonly extrapolated to a broad maturity. When you "trick" cycling, though, you...

Estimative Index, is it still relevant?

I think the main reason people get algae issues using EI Method is primarily because they blast too light in the tank or have a long photoperiod while not planting heavily in the beginning. After that is mismanagement of co2 and build up of waste organics. Sent from my SM-S918B using Tapatalk
