I have the Dennerle nano set and that works a treat, the 85g bottle lasts about 3 months. Although, I've recently upped the injection rate so the new bottle might not last that long.

Hi andy I don't know how many grams are in your bottle of co2 but going through one in a week sounds excessive. Best to check your connections with soapy water as you'll see bubbles if there are any leaks. I would hazard a guess that a 500g bottle should last over 1 month. As I got through...

Are these with the 80-90g bottles? I went through a 85g in 3 months in a 14 litre. Tbh, for your size of tank, you'd need 500g or more bottles to make it worth your while.

I understand that the pH change with adding co2 to the water isn't harmful to the fish due to the way in which the pH is changed with the co2 gas. Something to do with the kH or gH being stable - someone more techy will come around soon.

The DC only checks the co2 concentration at that point, so it's best to move it around, as the tank will have different concentrations all over the tank. My DC is lime green at lights out and greenish when lights come on. I don't think a co2 shift when lights are off are too bad, what you are...

What did you put in your drop checker? If you put pH reagent with 4 dkh water then it's telling you that you've not got enough co2 in the water. It could suggest that the bubbles aren't diffusing well and are reaching the surface to pop, wasting co2.

I've had no problems, now and again it coughs and puts a nice stream of tiny bubbles around the tank. I used to do the same with a Juwel internal filter but that didn't work as well.

My diffuser is right next to the filter intake. All of the bubbles go straight into the filter, to diffuse better. I've actually turned down the co2 injection rate now it's like that.

It'll start blue every time, that's ok. It takes a while for the co2 to be dissolved in the gas bubble in the drop checker and then for that gas to dissolve into the reagent/4dkh mix.

Plants prefer co2 gas, liquid carbon is a substiture for co2 which needs to be converted by the plant before it extracts the carbon. I would say that using liquid carbon you could get plants to pearl but it'd be more difficult. Even when using co2 gas, plants may not visually pearl as the flow...

Aquatic shops charge way over the top IMO. I asked for a refil of mine from a shop featured in PFK's shop of the year and was told a 500g would be nearly £70! Robbing :silent: I said to them that I'll get a 2kg FE instead for £15.

I looked into buying one of those, the regulator doesn't fit any widely available bottles. Otherwise, it's a good piece of kit.

There are two different types of airline, there's airline and then there's co2 tubing. I'm on the understanding that it's best to use the co2 tubing compared to the airline as it's more rigid and better suited to the way in which we supply co2 to the aquarium.

Just remember that the more you put in, the less flow you'll get.

It is noisey but wasn't too bad on mine. Maybe you could fill it with more sponge type things to trap the bubbles and make the smaller? It's easy enough to open for cleaning etc.

I try and put it as far away as the co2 injection point as possible and an area where you think flow is hindered. That way, you should have a reading from the DC at the worst place in the tank. :thumbup: Many people move the DC around to make sure all areas of the tank are getting sufficient co2.

I would of thought most would do it as it's £££s for them and regular income. Although the bloke did look at me funny when I said I was using it for an aquarium but then understood why. I just get them for "non extinguishing use".

If your cycling your tank then (as Dan the man states) just wait for the filter to process the nitrite to nitrate.

I think you're putting 2 and 2 together to get 5. Co2 does not cause nitrite (to my knowledge), the only cause of nitrite I know of is from the bacertia converting ammonia into it.

Look to get a 2kg co2 Fire Extinguisher, it should have the same fitting for the regulator that you're currently using. They're about £20 a time and I found a local fire safety place that supplies them to me.

You might not need to move to a pressurised system, you could increase the EasyCarbo dosing. Although, some inverts and plants don't like EasyCarbo (liquid carbon source) so it might be better for you to move to pressurised co2. In addition, pure co2 provides better plant growth than EasyCarbo...

I believe that the one you linked to is an internal reactor rather than an external one. Whereas the aquamedic one is an external inline reactor.

I have a similar thing, the flow is fairly constant over a time period. I track mine over 10 seconds to get an average.

Having a green DC is a good thing and that can remain when you turn it off over night. Plants will tell you quicker if they're unhappy, so keep an eye out for plant deficiencies and algae.

For many people, pearling is not a goal which they set out to achive. Plants can thrive without pearling as the o2 is diffused into the water quickly if you have high flow around the leaf. If you wish to see pearling, try turning off the filter for a few minutes and you might see your plants...

Hi James, It all depends on the size of the bubbles and the size of the tank! If you've got a drop checker with 4dkH water in there with the pH indicator, then you'll know if there's enough co2 in the water column. If would suggest you start of slow, maybe 1bps per second and observe the drop...

Most switch off the co2 on the night so that they save co2 gas rather than worry about a pH change. I'm not a techy in the pH/kH/gH stuff with water and fish but I've never had any problems. The only problem I've had is pumping too much co2 in there and gasing the fish - so get a drop checker...

The drop checker included in the Dennerle 125 Crystal Set is 3.5cm high and 4cm width. The problem for me is the suction cup as it increases the width by another cm or so.

I'll measure the dennerle one tonight, it is smaller than a standard one but just seems huge in my nano. If you can let me know when/if find a cal aqua one.

In my experience the bottle pressure drops rather quickly over a few days. In addition, I found that over time the injection rate increased with a quick co2 dump at the end of the life of the bottle.

I've had a few and the more co2 you drive through it the louder the noise will be.

I got a crystaline 125 set from Dennerle and whilst it's very nice, I find the diffuser rather large in my 12x10x8 inch aquarium. Are the inline glass diffusers any good or are there any tiny diffusors for my situation?

I've been told that not all disposable co2 bottles came with the same thread, when I was looking as I could only find a suitable reguator from Dennerle. So I've decided to use the Dennerle bottles rather than trying to find ones a little bit cheaper.

From my experience of using EasyCarbo as an alternative source of carbon for my plants, there is no better substitute than pure CO2 gas. I've had vastly improved plant growth and plant health since using pressurised CO2. In addition, some plants cannot convert the liquid into CO2, like vallis.

It took me a while to get around to getting pressurised canister into my front room, but once I did it's the best thing I've done. Having injected co2 in a tank helped me to no end and when I moved from EC to co2 there was no comparison.

I put mine on 1 hour before lights on and 1 hour before lights off. Having the co2 on after lights is a waste. Some people have it switched off much earlier than 1 hour before lights off.

Sometimes my bubble rate is a bit up and down. I removed my check valve and it was that. I've put it back but think that the check valve might be a bit sticky.

I've messaged the person with the nano co2 kit and they wouldn't tell me the thread size. So I might get the hydor kit if someone can confirm I can use anything but the more expensive hydor co2 bottles.

From the LFS or Pets at Home, it's the standard pH testing liquid. Api do one but there's a few out there in the market.

You need to use the standard bromo blue ph reagent to get the colour into the drop checker. I change mine once every blue moon, but others change it every couple of weeks.

My LFS does them but they're expensive, mine's never been refilled. I just return the 2kg FE to a local fire safety company for £15 and then get a new one.

That's fine. I had a similar kit to start with and then got a FE.

If it's one pictured below... Then it should as the those 500g bottles have a standard fitting thread which is the same as a FE. But you can get adaptors, but those are for the nano sized co2 bottles.

I guess you could mount it internally, I remember having an internal reactor. The connections don't really seem to be something that'll fit standard tubing easily but I would of thought it'd be the standard 16/20mm (best check that tho) and the height isn't really the right size for fitting...

That is an inline reactor which is external to the tank.

I get the same, I don't see as a problem. I shut off the co2 an hour before lights off and the bubble goes quick enough. A build up shows that your injecting a bit too much and more than the flow rate of the water can keep the bubbles circulating in the reactor.

As long as your careful, using pressurised is much better.

My only other thought would be are you sure it's co2 hose? As thats generally more rigid than a usual airline. If you are then it could be a problem with the diffuser.

Do you push it past the dimple around the glass? That should hold it in.

In your drop checker, you wish to have water what you know the dkh of. Therefore, when you put the pH reagent in it, you know what the colours will represent. If you don't use a 4dkh water in the drop checker, then the standard colours of blue - green - yellow will not provide an accurate...

I'm not sure how you mean. But I'd make sure that the co2 is rising up against the flow so try and put the end of the tube at the bottom where the water is suck in towards the bottom.

I don't think there's a problem doing that. Although when your injecting at higher rates it could be a problem with build up in the filter.

You need to put Co2 at the bottom with the flow going in at the top so that bubbles will be rising against the water.

I've have an Aquamas external reactor. I love it to be honest and seems to be working well with my JBL Cristal Profi e1500 external filter. I do inject at 2 bubbles per second as otherwise the drop checker is not blue. But obviously that'll be different in each tank.

I've got mine, water in at the top, co2 at the bottom rising against the flow. I have noticed since running it, there does seem to be some bubbles not getting stuck in the spongey bit. Some do. I've got it set at 1 bubble per second at the minute, see how it goes.
