    Stainless steel

Stainless steel is made to rust much slower compared to normal steel (it's in the name;)). Even filters are made from it (ADA) or filter in and outlets etc. It will rust eventually but unless you use salt water, this will be so extremely slow, it doesn't matter. And even if it did get rusty...

Converting a large aquarium - suggestions welcome!

As I've a very similar tank as already mentioned in one of the first posts (1000L with sump and recently switched to LED from T5) I think I can give my two cents... First off the CO2, I compared the gram/100L/day usage from my old tank (without sump but a little more light) with my new tank with...

PAR readings through air and water

The water surface reflects light, thus between just above the water line and just below the water line there is a drop in PAR. BUT, when going down further, light MIGHT increase. This is due to the fact that the glass reflect light when it is filled with water. In an empty aquarium only the...

Is an external CO2 reactor the best method?

I prefer external reactors for a few reasons. One is 100% dissolved CO2. Everything is dissolved, so even though I get my CO2 for free, I use less. Second is no bubbles in the aquarium. I just don't like it. The water may be 100% clear, but with all the fine bubbles it looks a little cloudy IMO...

Do plants grow in plain sand?

Yep! I can only think of two disadvantages. The first is that sand does become anaerobic sometimes. This happens more often with thick layers of sand, a large bioload and little maintenance, but could be an issue. The second is that you don't have a 'buffer'. When PO4 hits zero, there is no more...

    White spot

With Amano shrimp, just raise the temp to 30 degrees. They handle it without problems;)
  13. Yo-han

    White spot

A UV won't do the job. For example, a 9W UV needs a max flow of 50 lph to kill parasites. So the way we set them up, they are useless against parasites and such. Best solutions for white spot is, salt, heat or malachite green. I don't think you want to use salt unless you've a quarantine tank...

    Aeration why?

More important, your filter bacteria like the extra O2 and it raises the pH. Most bacteria in our filter are most active at a 'high' pH (8-8,5). Amano doesn't use air stones. Instead he just raises the lily pipes so they suck in extra air. You can use an air pump instead off course (I do!:))...

A Few Problems I would like to sort.

Unless your goal is breeding them, there will be no problem. For a low tech you don't need high amounts of ferts (there is fertilizing and there is EI);) so the rise in TDS will be 50-80max. Hardness of the water and pH, everything stays the same so fish don't care about it.

A Few Problems I would like to sort.

There is low tech and starving your plants and hoping for a miracle. You already know the answer to your question. Start fertilizing (still low tech) or starve your plants (low tech) ugly looking, lots of algae, high maintenance;)

Being sceptical is always good. But just keep saying it is an ozone generator without having any evidence is useless. Ozone has a distinct smell and is not odourless, it is clear to light blue, so easily analysed just by smelling or collecting the gas and analyzing it. A company can choose to...

    Very approximate evaporation rates?

With a surface of 120 x 60. 24 degrees Celcius and a room temp of 20, my water drops about 1,5 cm average in a week, so 10L. I think the guess of foxfish of 1L will be really close!

    Temperature as limiting factor

    Temperature as limiting factor

Plant mass didn't changed, I trimmed in the mean time. I increased CO2 to be sure but no difference. Are there ways to compensate? More ferts, more CO2, more light?

    Temperature as limiting factor

I got a nano cube which is unheated. Although water parameters and fertilization are kept the same (90% water change so quite stable). I do notice plant growth slowed down lately. I went straight to the solution;)
  29. Yo-han

    Daily water changes and EI

    1. I think it would be best to do it early in the morning. For one, because plants can suck up CO2 from the air and use it during the photo period. And second, so you can observe your fish the entire day for any weird behavior. 2. You can always add half a dose of macros to be sure;)

BBA is one of the hardest algae to get rid of. Like Iain said, it doesn't go away on it's own. So first make sure it isn't growing anymore. This is the hardest part. Best way to keep plants until you're ready to plant?

Most plants are grown emersed so keeping them emersed and humid is enough. A clear plastic bag for example. The colder, the longer they stay fresh. A bucket with room temperature water is fine as well as is dumping them in the tank. As long as it is not more than 5 days, no problems with any...

    sump or externals?

Maybe someone else has a different opinion but IME it is just that simple! More light means more CO2. 40. Yo-han

    sump or externals?

Except the fact that a sump loses more CO2 (but this can be reduced greatly if you want) I think a sump is far superior. Or to be more convincing: Amano says a canister is inferior to a sump:P

CO2 sensitivity in Otos and shrimp

Simple said: the oxidizers attack all kind of pathogens so this is why they stated it helps your livestock. It think oxidators can do the same thing with algae spores and thus reducing algae. Twinstar..what is it?

It's not oxygenating at all! It produces O 2- ions not O2. Basically its oxidating your tank instead of oxygenating. Like adding H2O2 all day long or any other oxidator. Amano's use of diffusers

Plants take up micros and macros by roots and leaf. It differs a little per plant what the preferred route is. For example cryptos and echinos prefer roots, while most other plants can do both. Epiphytes need macros in the water column so 0:0 (P:N) is not a ideal way to go (perhaps with only...

    Amano's use of diffusers

Lots of CO2 might get lost but it might still be high CO2. The old setups used less light and stated 1:10 PO4:NO3 as well. He uses way lower now. I believe I saw some on a different forum. They are quite low indeed. Just enough to grow most plants like glosso if enough CO2 is injected. But...

    Amano's use of diffusers

I agree with all the above but not with the low CO2, compared to the amount of light it is high CO2. Second I always felt tanks with ADA type diffusors can go with lower amounts of CO2. The only explanation I could think of is that the small CO2 bubbles hitting the leaves in reality delivers...

When the CO2 is totally dissolved it does not go up. It just flows with the water. Undissolved bubbles do go up. I read a lot about removing the balls from the AM reactor on this forum. I use the same reacttor with bioballs but with a biopass, no problems here!

You can't use fine substrate because the substrate is part of your filter. And second the air bubbles will throw out all CO2. Only thing I could think of is the use of epiphytes which are not that CO2 dependent, Anubias, ferns and mosses on some nice hard scape. Maybe cover the whole bottom...
