if it's not too late i'd add the media back in. As part of the constant cycle of growth and decay plants release ammonia into the water column so you need the media to deal with that. Hope this helps, M

no pics to hand but one halfway house solution is to diy a filter sieve from acrylic then connect to a shortened glass filter intake. I have plans for this in order to completely remove green plastic from my tank!

Hello there, Not sure what you mean by pads? Foam (and if so what grade/density?) or floss? Of course, the finer the grade the moreit needs cleaning. If you want to make it less of an issue stick some filter sponge over your filter intake - this then traps a lot of the mucka nd is much easier...

If you're up north at any point they run a 600 on their cichlid display tank at MA South Leeds (just off junctn. 41 M1). I can't guarantee exactly how quiet it was as they have their stock tanks burbling away in the background but it certainly didn't sound like a 747 taking off! Cheers! Matt

or could you insert a false end into the tank (you don't give dimensions but glass wouldn't have to be thick as it'd have equal water pressure on both sides) with blacked out glass to hide a standard heater , lay a small internal down "flat" as it were, and then run tubing out from the filter...

Could you custom build an intake then run a hydor? Or could you fit a tiny sump with a standard heater? m

Internals are often a bit limited in the media you can put in them. If you can fit any filter floss in that should solve most of the problem. Otherwise an external into which you can definitely fit floss and/or graded filter sponges will definitely solve the problem cheers M

It kinda is! oily residue is what's released from plants when they're not receiving their optimum nutrients - often due to underdosing of ferts (inc. CO2) or poor flow Matt

The lack of oily residue may also be a very, very good thing - it could indicate that you are delivering nutirents to your plants more effectively! Cheers Matt

Sintered glass (SintoMec) is by far the best for biofiltration - MASSIVE surface area for bacterial colonisation. if you're having problems with tannin stained water add some carbon, otherwise you get great results using sintered glass through all filter trays hope this helps, Matt

Acitvated carbon is the usual recommendation for removing colour and either floss or fine filter sponge should remove the particles. I've never tried it but i'd have thought that cotton wool (from the pharmacy) would beocme too waterlogged and impede flow Cheers! Matt

If you can seed the new filter with some mature media it will help. Even then i'd run both filters side by side for at least 8 weeks as the bio-load on the new external will be lower than you might expect as the water is effectively "double filtered". Hope this helps! Matt
