Filter Porn - ADA Superjet

reading about the father of the aquascape hobby Takashi Amano. So in that sense I believe him
So I suppose you're in using activated carbon for the main filter media?

Only lasts a month or so, so I wouldn’t even bother (as in, I didn’t)

Yes, but Amano did. Consistently.
This is one of the few things in which I'm in an agreement with Amano. It's only the high cost of premium AC which he employed in high amounts that prevents me from following his method. But I'm sure it's one of the few filtration methods which make sense.

From the newest version of the manual in the ADA superjet, they stopped supplying the ES600 with anthracite (the new stock from Japan). Instead, it now comes with Bio Rio G (their version of ceramic media).
But regardless, I did use anthracite with my ES300 when I set up one of my tanks. It does indeed help with leeching out a lot of tannins and other organic matter during the early period of an aquarium. For my 90p and ES600, I ended up not using any of the anthracite and instead just set it up with Bio Rio + API active carbon alongside a dark start to cut down my water change frequency and establish the tank quickly without the big algae breakout period. I am very happy with the method as it helped me cut down the pain points associated with the original ADA tank start method (water changes every day/other day -> twice/week --> once per week)

If you’re going to pay that amount of money for a filter, it should come with an adjustable rate DC pump.

Iwaki makes a nice pump but they are m inefficient compared to DC pumps and, as stated, not adjustable.

The pumps are picked for the Aquarium they are made for. I have 120p so I have the 1200es.
