I used Dennerle crustagran and they both loved it.

They should move every few days, take them out, if they stink they're dead. If you touch their foot they should retract it if they're alive. I believe all snails will be eaten by assassins.

Nerites are great for algae clean up, IMO they are the best clean up staff you can have.

I had one too, it was really good. Not a good an algae eater but was always active. They're much larger than nerites too.

Nerite eggs only hatch in salty water but their eggs are known to be a pain to remove from the hardscape. They're really good algae eaters tho.

I'm currently researching on the internet and coming across people with similar problems, mainly on the THE BARR REPORT Some seem to think it's what we dose rather than anything else, mainly KNO3. But Tom Barr says that he's gone upto 160ppm of Nitrate and got a few Amano deaths.

Mine could be nitrate related, whilst I dose a fair bit into my tank, there's loads already in my water. It's got to be something I'm doing rather than something in the water, like copper etc.

Re: Conundrum... In addition, reading up on Cherry Shrimp... With Nerite snails requiring temps of 22-26C with my tank not being hot enough at around 20C (at best). If I had to bet on something for the snails, it might be the oxygen levels?

Re: Conundrum... I happily kept shrimp in Halifax but moved to Cheltenham and can't seem to keep shrimp or snails alive. I had MTS die within a few days of introduction and never got to the bottom of it myself. There's other people on here who just can't keep inverts for one reason or another...

I resisted the urge to get some more at the weekend but did change to a DIY all in one solution which seems to be working wonders. I wonder if it's temp related in that tank as I don't have a heater in there. I might consider getting an in-line heater but funds are tight as I'm buying a house...

Thanks James. If I get anymore I'll move to EI method via dry ferts and put the TPN+ on hold as I think I'm overdosing for my tank size.

It sounds like it could be a o2 issue then as I've always tried to limit surface movement to keep co2 in.

If you've got pressurised co2 then you shouldn't need to dose the max of EC. I'd stop dosing EC unless youre using it to kill algae. Better to be safe than sorry.

I see the shrimp walking up the glass but they don't clean it as much as the rock. Where the pest snails go, it's crystal clear so having a snail could help with that.

Tbh, if you're getting shrimp you might not need a snail. My cherry shrimps have cleaned up everything super quick!

Yup, nerites are great and don't reproduce in non brackish water, but they will leave white eggs around the place which are a pain to remove. There's a large range of different ones too.

All shrimps are sensitive to EasyCarbo/Excel dosing, the main thing is do not overdose. I was ever so careful when I had CRS as like you say, it could be expensive to make a mistake. I would suggest that you look to get pressurised co2 as I've moved to that and my plants have responded...

Got 3 of these today, will see how they go. They were immediately active (quicker than nerites in the past).

Funny you should say that, I caught my Ottos at it this morning!! They used to be at it all day every day for a while, but it might just be that I can see them in the fewer plants I've got.

I believe that they only jump when water quality is an issue.

Having a hunt around RE easy carbo I came across this... From that not only does easy carbo supply co2 to the water but it uses up o2 in there. Maybe the red bit should be adhered to?

Not sure what was wrong, did you change anything in the tank just before the deaths? I'm a little bit worried about keeping CRS as I'm going to put some in my nano. Did you only use EasyCarbo as the co2 source? As you tank had algae, that might be showing that something was going wrong.

I might then try a couple of lower grades and then treat myself to some higher grades. Are they as sensitive as each other anyway?

Should I just got straight away and get S grades or should I get low grades to start off with? I don't want to spend a load of money on higher grades and then kill them and kill my wallet in the process.

I saw some of these in AquaJardin today and they looked beautiful. I'd like to get them to keep them and wondered what people found how they do once there's no snails to eat? Do they eat algae etc?

I do feed sparingly and my Ottos only get food once every other day.

I've had a recent infestation of these snails, must of come in some recent plants. When I see them I remove them, but they're new ones popping up all the time. Although the ramshorn snails I used to have, are nearly all gone now. My MTS never seem to take off.

I've metioned before that I've never had any luck with keeping shrimp when dosing with EC. It might have not been the EC but have tried a few times and they all die within a week. I've stopped using EC now as I've got a co2 system and will be trying shrimp again in the future but in a different...

Just wodering what would be better, add more Ottos or snails. I'd like nerites and the Staghorn ones might be best for me as they're smaller, but as others have said they might get lost in the size of my tank (180ltr)

I managed to acquire some a few months ago. They survived the move, although, I've only really seen one or two at a time on a night. I would add them again to a newer tank and think them going through the gravel is a big plus when your keeping plants.

Hmm looks odd. Not sure tbh, they look a bit different to the nerite snail eggs I had. Are they hard like a shell? How about if you shine a light near/through it can you see anything in it? Like you can with a chicken's egg.

I have some MTS's but not seen any of that. Is it ulcers on the shell or could it be baby snails?

I managed to source some Zebra Nerite snails and they arrived (by snail mail!!! lol) As stated in another thread they're going to be QT'd for a week or so to make sure they're ok. Photos will come along soon enough.

I think I might be looking at getting some shrimp once my planted tank gets going. On the photos I've seen they do keep everything clean, whereas my apple snail and BN plec do leave a bit of green about. Do shrimps get on with BN plecs?
