Re: Tonsers 420L "Triassic Hollow" - Day6
Looks amazing. How do you find maintenance on a tank like this, only being able to access it from behind? Becuase I really like the idea of a tank in a wall - so to speak.
Thanks
Adam
Does changing the bulbs over from a t8 unit to t6's have any actual effect to plants, apaprently, t6's are 40% brighter, but i have just read that as the surface area of the t6 is smaller than t8, the light is simply more concentrated when looking at it, however, because no more watts are being...
Re: Tonsers 420L "Triassic Hollow"
That is simply superb, Im loving seeing great scapers like yourself come up with this stuff, such an inspiration!
Adam
I have it, its growing incredibly slowly, but still healthy, i just prune it when i see fit really, take it right back down to the substrate as cut leaves wont continue to grow.
The tank i have it in is: 35l, 3x8w t5, 2ml tpn+, 2ml easycarbo(both daily). and waterchanges weekly.
I have...
I did have 11, they were wierdly sensitive and died off quickly, but, also, get a sponge to cover your intake, they really are tiny little fish! I would say any number up to 20 should look good.
I love the idea of these, but, after having a baby biorb(yes, i know  ) im never going acrylic again, the amount of scratches was just silly, and i'm really careful!
Adam
It looks great, what we would call a Dutch style scape(i believe). You have some great colours and textures together, im afraid i cant make suggestions to improve, im simply not that skilled.
Adam
It is possible to have a planted tank-even high tech, with an inert, no nutrient enriched substrate. Although this places all the emphasis on dosing into the water column, I believe it to give scope for mistakes and if nutrient levels drop and if plants suddenly need more, they can suck them up...
Bleach works well, squeeze a little on or soak it in a 50/50 bleach water solution, when its clean, remove. Remember to rinse heavily after, and also i know some people rinse it in dechlorinator after too.
Adam
I can never understand why people want to do this(no offence) to me, it just makes sence that the sudden change in light will not be matched by the increment in nutrients and co2, which may result in algae,
just my 2pence,
Adam
I have cherrys with my mountain minnows, I have reason to believe a vast ammount of the babies get eaten but aslong as the tank is heavily planted and there are plenty of low hiding spaces you should have success.
Hi guys, i have the following set up now:
35litre tank
2x8w t5=16w/8(gallons) its 2wpg, which on a nano i belive would be classed as low tech,
oliver knotts nature soil,
what should i be dosing on this, i plan to do water changes very very little, so dose wise i was thinking of just putting...
Hi, just a quick question really, for my nano i added an extra pump so atm i have 2 lots of lily pipes in the tank, i want to reduce this to just 1 lot(intake and outlet).
I have found some hose pipe 3 way connectors(12.7mm) on ebay, although i am aware this may reduce the flow even more, would...
Re: Ad's Low tech-ish 54l
I think this bad boy is due an update-
Ive been kindly given some hairgrass, hydrocoytle and e.tennellus, and added Ludwigia Rubin Repens since. However, my P.helferi carpet didnt last, and got uprooted bit by bit  Maybe due to the low light..
Comments...
I certainly am obsessed with flow, unless I can see the plants swaying to what I think is enough I will increase. Although I started my 60l with the stock 300lph(approx) internal filter for flow, I have soon added a koralia nano(900lph), the more flow the better-to a certain extent  The...
Re: Discussion: What's your favourite part of the hobby and
Apart from the overall beauty of a nicely planted tank I enjoy the fact that it never stays the same, watching a tank adapt into a mature display, and having a little bit of my own mother nature to tend to is great.
but, just to add to what Darrel said, dont keep multies and similis' together, i accidently purchased 2 similis for my multi tank(thinking they were multies, believe me, its an easy mistake) the similis ruled, so i had to get rid of them.
no probs mate,
they are nearly impossible to sex, you will be a very lucky person to come back with that ratio.. id go with a group of 6 and then eventually you will have a pair formed. the rest can be removed if needed, although multies are colonial so it shouldnt be too much of a problem.
if you are coming anywhere near me anytime soon i can sell you mine, im having to cut down tanks due to electricity and attempting to keep marines.
they are great little fish, i have 3 but they havnt bred yet...
I think aqua one did a luminaire for 18's, i struggled to source one, but, they occasionally pop up on ebay, LD linked one a couple months back i think. I'll try and get you more info if you want..
Re: Ad's Low tech-ish 54l
unsure what to do with this now..?
ive done a real hard prune back of my java fern to try and get rid of the algae infested leaves, but, its still there, ive got some kind off fuzz algae, staghorn, and green spot, what do i do? im currently:
2ml tpn+...
2 pots of HC came today that i ordered from AE, I noticed it had some clear jelly type stuff on the rockwool, im just curious of what this is? fertilisation?
thnks.
Re: Saintly's 120cm latest scape
Very nice wood, and a crackin mound :D
do you always do it like this, create a rock mound and then add the wood, i had never thought of doing it.
Re: ADA vs Oliver Knott
I have used nature soil, my only niggle with it that its really light so goes everywhere and is sometimes hard to hold down plants, i would go for the columbo stuff from the planted box.
nah, Luke, they leave him alone, although i find that the apple snails do not survive for a vast ammount of time, this could be linked to high ph, or maybe just the lack of leftover food.
@Tom- thanks, i did loads and loads of research before getting him, its like one big project, ive gotta...
I have 4 :D
40cm planted
60cm planted
80cm green spotted puffer(tetraodon nigroviridis) currently brackish, turning into marine.
puffer(v hard to get a good pic)
45cm shelldweller tank(neolamprologus multifasciatus)
If you were using the filter to a descent capacity then doing that at night would reduce the ammount of bacteria in the filter, which could cause ammonia spikes-one thing you definatley dont want in a standard fish tank, let alone a fully planted one where it could cause algae issues.
As long as i can achieve a HC carpet for my nano in that time, im in:
George Farmer
Nick16
Tonser
Samc
Stuworrall
SteveUK
aaronnorth
Krish's Bettas
Jase
luke
James Marshall

Re: Ad's Low tech-ish 54l
ok, so shall i just go back to the 2ml tpn+ and 2ml easycarbo daily? do you know if spot dosing easycarbo will kill the algae?
Re: Ad's Low tech-ish 54l
Growth has been slow, but steady from this, up until about a week ago when i first noticed signs of algae, im getting some small thread or fuzz on my java fern narrow  its rough to touch, and looks to be a greyish colour..
however it has increased masively...
in my 35litre i have:
1x otto
1x nerite snail
about 20 cherry shrimp
the otto tends to keep the leaves of the plants clean whereas the snail tends to clean the glass and hardscape.
edit: to add to what Sam said about the shrimp, mine are breeding, although the babies are being...
here http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/allinone.htm
and then the best one to use is method 3:
DIY TPN+ (3)
48g Potassium Nitrate
2.2g Potassium Phosphate (monobasic)
17g Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate (Epsom Salts)
0.5g E300 Ascorbic Acid
0.2g E202 Potassium Sorbate
5g EDTA Chelated Trace...
I have found that vallis will melt and then the new growth should give some resistance to it, ive added vallisneria spiralis to my 60l which recieves 2ml of easycarbo daily, a few leaves are melting, but others flourishing.
ok, i'll look into the other species, i already have a pair of bolivian rams in the tank, so im not trying to make it in proportion really,
thanks guys
oh, no, sorry mate, i should have mentioned, i have already researched the fish, they will be fine in a shoal of about 6, theres plenty of space, i was just wondering if they will dig the plants up.
thanks anyway
Hi all, I want to get a shoal of corys for my 60litre, but, do then rip up the plants? the majority of the plants *should* be fairly stable as the tank has been going for a good few weeks, its corydoras trilineatus i was looking at...
thanks
Adam
Ive never been a fan of Fancys in the past, seeing them as overly modified, so i am looking forward to the end product to see if it can swing me.
Im growing it in my rekord 60, Jack. ive got the 1xt6, im loving everything about the 60cm, growth is real slow, but every plant is super healthy. Im dosing 3ml TPN+ and 2ml easycarbo daily, i will experiment with cutting out the tpn+ dosing, doing only macro's and see what works in the comming...
nah, they are not even the long finned variety, i managed to catch one flaring at another, they are constantly doing it, chasing each other around all day, one of my females is so fat, i think she may be ready to drop her eggs, which would be nice.
Adam
Re: Jase's 28l Long - MANZ GOT WOOD
 Damn it Nature Soil!
After working with a fairly tall tank with the arc (compared to its length) I am very tempted to go with this type of set-up, it gives a different dimension.
good luck with it,
I agree, it is good stuff, plants seem to thrive, but, maybe look at the alternative substrate from the guys at the planted box, theirs is cheaper too
I keep my WCMM's at 24-25c this brings out their colours, when you see them in the lfs they are whitish looking, very plain and often...
Yea, i thought about them breeding as the lot i had before(year ago) bred, but, none of the fry survived after a month, i wondered if they layed eggs in this tank, would the shrimp eat them?
Ive swapped the moss carpet for some HC, which Nelson kindly donated-thanks Neil!
Im too embarresed to get a FTS atm, but, heres a couple of pics...
It shouldnt take the hc long to carpet, ive planted it fairly compact, and it was previously in a submerged set-up, which helps.
The sand...
