Unfortunately, one has died overnight and i can't see the other that was weak. Assuming he has passed away, do you think its still worth doing the treatment?
Thanks both. It does seem like a virus or something. Very odd. I’ve never seen anything like it in 25 years of fish keeping!
@Gill - Did Tue fish recover after that treatment? I’ll pop out tomorrow to try and get some of that treatment.
Hi guys,
I have a problem which I'm hoping someone can help with.
I've a 240 litre aquarium that's heavily planted. I'm stocked with Neon tetras, dwarf neon rainbow fish, ottos and dwarf gourami's.
I had 2 pearl gourami's in there for a few months (added at the same time as the dwarf...
As Ian has said, you need a pump. I get 100l out of mine in about 6 hours connected to my shower cold outlet. Get the highest output device you can afford.
I guess you could call it rattling. Its constant and consistent at all times of day and doesnt change of i shake the filter to purge any of the trapped gasses that build up.
Interesting! Thats not a problem that i'm having too much of but when it does happen, it can be even more noisy. Do you...
Yeah, done all of the above. I do notice air gets trapped inside as well ans then the filter sometimes burps our the excess. I assume this is becasue my CO2 is coming out of solution as its agitated throught he filter mesh. I'm going to try rmeoving some of it and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks for the reply.
I've not checked the impeller but havent taken it apart either so assume they would be there unless its been dlievered with missing parts.
I have seen that video but it seems to be more about the burping as opposed to the constant loudness of the filter.
Cheers
Hi all,
As part of my new tank setup i treated myself to a Oase Biomaster thinking that these are premium filters with great features. Problem is i'm finding it REALLY noisy, so much so that i can hear it in other rooms of the house and over the sound of the TV of a night. Been in touch with...
Tesco sell de-ionised water which does the same thing.
Whats the 'pink tinge' mantra then? Is this where theres enough of a dose that anything falling out of solution doesnt matter? That's always been my problem with iron supplements.
Hi folks.
From my journal:
Tank: Juwel Rio 240 in Grey (Filter Removed)
Filter: Oase Biomaster Thermo 850
Light: Juwel HeliaLux Spectrum LED Light with Wifi Controller
CO2: Pressurised with CO2Art inline diffuser
Hardscape: Redmoor Wood & mini Landscape Rock
Water: 75% RO / 25% Tap
Ferts: DIY...
Here’s a few pic of the plants during tonight’s water change. I’m certain something is wrong but I’m a bit confused as to what. Wondering if it might be flow related as I noticed that the skimmer is barely pulling any surface water which indicates a reduced flow for some reason. Any thoughts...
Week two gone and i've done many water changes with RO to get the DTS level to around 100. Thats down from around 400 at the start. I've been doing EI so far but plan to change to a DIY all in one solution so i can move to an auto doser.
Growth seems slow but there are signs of life. No major...
Hi folks,
I wanted to start a journal given i've just spend a decent amount of cash on a fully new setup... the first one i've ever been able to do without being on a serious budget. You may have seen my threads asking for advice previously, so here goes....
Tank: Juwel Rio 240 in Grey (Filter...
Hi all,
Thanks to @Tim Harrison I ended up getting a Juwel Rio 240. I was more than happy with the quality and they really have come along considerably in cabinet quality compared to 18 odd years ago. Really surprised!
Also ended up going with the Oase Biomaster Thermo 850 and the Juwel...
Thanks both.
@bazz Interestingally, i thought i was in a very hard water area but Severn Trend suggest moderatly hard. Just over 10 german degrees which is lower than i expected. None the less, i feel i'll benefit from RO. Not least because i'll use it to brew beer with as well :D
Hi all,
Following years of jealousy over those with super soft water, I've decided to get me an RO unit. Not specifically for aquarium use butwill be heavily weighted towards it. Having done some reading yesterday I find myself a little confused. Back when i used to test my water, it was all...
Thanks for the reply. What lead time did you have? I had a look at their website and, assuming i got the right one, didnt have much in the way of cabinet options?
Thanks for that. Seems they have come further along in the cab quality since I bought my current Juwel around 18 years ago!
I tried…. And failed with the open top discussion 😂
Going back looking at the Juwel 240 type aquariums (or even the Others mentioned), I wouldn’t be able to get the Chihiros light from what I understand as they have to be open air. Is there any other controllable light that would work in this...
I did discuss that with the wife and was promptly shut down. The open light was the deal breaker there :(
But that's a cracking looking set-up you have there!
Thanks for the reply.
I was quite impressed on the quality of the Fluval cabinet to be honest. certainly in comparison to the Juwel one i have now. I'm guessing the D-D tanks is float glass? Can't see any mention of Optiwhite.
On the lighting, it was more around the customisation of spectrum...
Thanks both.
Those Oase are expensive! Whats so good about them that makes them premium?
I see both brands ship with lighting included. Is this of good quality, so that i could forget about the Chihirios? Was quite looking forward to having a play with that!
Hi all,
Originally posted in the general forum but didnt get a reply so thought it might be better placed here.
I'm after a new setup and am going to buy everything new. I've been involved in fishkeeping for years and have evolved to where i am now, mainly on a budget. So i'm treating myself...
how do you keep your rocks so pristine? mine end up getting covered in black stuff over time... not sure its diatoms but can't be totally sure. Plants are fine though.
Hi Tim,
Thats a shame. Some of your other scapes have been spot on so i expected you'd be able to recover this.
Just noticed you are in Leicester. Do you use any of the local places for anything plant related?
Hi john,
Interesting read as I've also had a similar problem with, what I assume is diatoms, for all my aquarium owning time. Its particularly strong on hard scape however I'm having a bit of success at the moment where plants are seemingly growing better than ever. I also get it a little on...
Hi guys,
does anyone have a working email address for Aquael? I need to get hold of them as I have a filter issue drawing in air.
Seems the contact form doesn't work on their site?
Cheers
I'm also having the same problem. Out of interest, how did you contact them? I've tried their online form which doesn't work so I've emailed the info email address. Haven't had any response at present.
Is there a way to combat this outside of RO water? I was tempted to give RO a go but then its just another expense.
Are you saying that magnesium isn't something we get much of over the UK in tap water?
Thanks Darrel. So based on that, is it worth me adding Epson Salts or would my trace mix be enough? I have been adding but i guess by doing so I'm hardening my already hard water. Is that right?
Hi guys,
I was reading an interesting threat on using epson salts as part of the EI regiem and that Gh of tap water may not be a mix of calcium and magnesium.
So I did some digging on Severn Trent's webpage and found that magnese is 1.1 parts per BILLION. I can't find anything relating to...
Hi Guys,
Simple question: What new filter should I get for my 180L tank?
My current one was 1850L turnover per hour and was an Eheim pro 3. This was one of the ones that had a design flaw whereby the head fills with water due to a problem with the primer. Has this issue been fixed on the...
Hi Darrel. Whats the correlation here (in simple terms) around hard water and it making use of fertilisers? what is concidered hard water?
I've recently been toying with the idea of an RO unit to see how that affects plants.
Hi all,
Its been a while but I'm coming to the end of my dry salts and from what I can tell, the Nutrient Company no longer sell dry salts.
Does anyone have any suggestion where to get them from? The EI method seems to not be so popular any more.
Cheers
Interesting read this. I have the same problem and I thought it was my Angel fish but looking at other peoples thoughts I'm now certain its my SAE's. The size of the bite marks make it almost certain!
Hi all,
Quick photo update. I've added a skimmer Inlet which looks much better than the green Eheim jobbies. Added some Rotala as well as moving the C. Helferi to behind the Java Fern.
You can see from the pictures that the Rotala has changed form form how it was in its previous tank. When...
All sorted... i think :D

Flow is back up to what it was before installation so says the Eheim software.
So I've figured the issue but not figured how to resolve it. I have a Juwel Rio 180 and the water line sits a lot lower on the glass than a rimless tank as it has an upper surround. The issue is that the floating part of the inlet is not floating high enough and is blocking the water flow to the...
I must admit I haven't done that. It was water change day as well so it is possible air got in there. I'm not so sure why the flow has dropped to much though. I'll take a better look tonight.
Hi Guys,
I've just added a glass surface skimmer inlet to my Eheim Pro e3 700 (1850LPH) and I've noticed that there's a reduced flow since adding it. I've got the skimmer taking most of its water in from the bottom of the inlet however I'm getting relatively frequent burps from the filter. I've...
Redone the calculation sand it seems I'm still OK even though I forgot to calculate the additional Potassium. A 40ml dose gives the following:
Potassium Nitrate 93g = 8ppm Potassium, 12.67ppm Nitrate
Potassium Phosphate 13g = 0.83ppm Potassium, 2.02ppm Phosphate
Magnesium Sulphate 100g = 2.2ppm...
I've just made a new patch of EI macros but with a different formula from what I have been using previously. I've gone with the following all based on calculations from James Planted Tank EI Calculator:
Disolved in 1000ml water
40ml dose
Potassium Nitrate 93g = 12.67ppm Nitrate
Potassium...
I'm guessing that's not good then and that it is no longer available to the plants at this point? Is there a way around it at all? I did dose a full 20ml in a dingle dose so wondered if dosing this at the same time as my micro solution might be a better approach?
I did buy this on the...
Hi All,
Yesterday I had some more plants turn up to fill in the gaps and I'm really pleased with how it looks and can see how I want it to look as it fills in.
I ordered the following from aquarium Gardens:
- Staurogyne rubescens
- Hydrocotyle tripartita Japan
- Pogostemon Erectus
-...
Thanks to all who replied on this thread. I am today going to change my recipe for the MACRO EI mix. I've been doing a lot of reading about the PPM's needed however I have one question.
I see the target PPMs are as follows:
Nitrate 20–30 ppm
Phosphate 1-3 ppm
Potassium 20-30ppm
Magnesium...
I have an Eheim Pro e3 which is rated at 1850 LPH. When I put a bazooker atomiser under the filter inlet it most certainly caused burping. I have since moved to an in-line diffuser on the filter outlet. I don't mind too much the bubbles but may give it a try on the inlet and see if there are any...
HI all,
Today I finished the planting of my old plants (lots of monte carlo going in the for sale section). I still need some more which I'll be looking to buy in the coming days but I'm not sure what. The area specifically is the back right of tank in front of the C.Helferi. There's quite a...
As promised here is a couple of pictures albeit teaser pictures :D
This is certainly the most intricate rock work I have ever done and I'm actually quite pleased with how the 'scape is looking. I've added a lot c more sand and built up towards the back right hand corner using cat litter...
Hi all,
Yesterday was the day. The old tank was ripped down and a new 'scape was started. Its been very slow work as I don't have a place to relocate the fish to so I left them in situ and tried to be as careful as I could not to spook them too much. Its been a challenge to come up with a new...
Hi all,
This 'scape has run its course and I'm planning to tear it down in the coming days. There's a number of lessons I have learnt from this attempt which I plan to take into the next and I plan on reusing most of the plants currently in there but with some additions. What those additions...
Hi @George Farmer ,
I'm interested in your use of the Tropica fertiliser. You mentioned at the start of the journal that you planned to use 10-20ml PER DAY however the Tropica website states that the dosage is 6ml per 50L of water PER WEEK.
I'm curious as to why you went for this amount of...
Yes, that's one of the primary reasons I selected it. Quote reasonable in price for DTPA chelated iron. I read another members posts about their struggles with standard EI iron chelators in hard water so thought I would give this a go and see if there is any difference in the results.
I must...
Yes, I do have a touch of that below the level of the plants. I though that was down to a lack of flow below the plants.
I have started adding Easy Life Ferro to supplement iron as well so I can at least rule that out.
It looks like I should change my EI recipe as well then.
Oh how i wish I was Iron..... :D
I was reading on here yesterday that might be needed. EDTA vs another chelator (cant remember the name) in hard water. I have hard water and have always struggled to get the kind of growth that others get. I considered getting an RO unit but then changed my...
That is what I have been doing although I was expecting everything below the cut to remain healthy so i could achieve a bushy appearance. Is that normal behaviour?
I should point that I only have GSA on those leafs and a very tiny amount on the anubas. Everywhere else is clean, including the glass. In fact I can't remember the last time i cleaned the glass!
I have the lights on a dimmer so only run them at 50% of the maximum power. I have no idea what...
I can't tell you in PPM but i can tell you what I add to a solution:
4tsp Potassium Nitrate
1tsp Potassium Phosphate
6tsp Magnesium Sulphate
500lm water.
I dose 40ml 3 times a week.
If you are using in conjunction with the internal filter then that should be fine. Next you need to ensure you are up to the right level on the CO2 front.
Interesting that you say lack of PO4. I dose EI levels of it and my tap water is also loaded with the stuff so of all the nutrients that would be my least expected deficit.
I forgot to add, I've ditched the Koralia and added a full length spray bar instead so the flow you mention is not as fierce now. Also, CO2 is on 3 hours before lights on :)
@Paulo Soares - I understand that I could turn the lights down however I am wanting to learn more about what causes specific deficiencies.
I was reading a very interesting article on here about the effect hard water has on nutrient uptake and while I'm no expect, I do believe this could be...
I'm with Paulo. Don't worry about the bacteria. Many people use an external filter for water movement more than filtration. I'm not sure on the flow rates but check out the Hydor Koralia range for powerheads. They can be used in conjunction with the Juwel filter. If it was me, I would take the...
Hi guys,
Its safe to say my tank has gone through some neglect over the past couple of months. That said I've done a water change every week without fail (60%) and kept up with the fertilising.
Even when I was on top of the maintenance I still have this problem with old leafs discolouring and...
Welcome to the forum.
The first thing I can say is that the internal Juwel filter is not sufficient for creating the amount of flow. The way its pointing up is also an issue as its is not churning the water as the plants need. For me, you have two options. Get a canister filter that follows the...
I don't think the cat litter affected growth in any way however it was so light that i found it hard to keep plants in the substrate, especially when taking into account the high flow rates I had.
Thanks Dave. It's a little more chunky than I'd have like but I wanted to use the Eheim installation set attachments as its more flexible than the standard shepherds crook.
Hi all.
I've been pretty busy on this tank over the last week after ordering some maintenance accessories. I've gotten myself a couple of different sized wire brushes so i could give the rocks a good scrub and I've also made myself a DIY acrylic spray bar. I'm quite pleased with the results...
So today I'm going to be making a couple of changes in the hope I can increase flow to the Tripartita. I've ordered myself some acrylic tube so I'm going to make a full length spray bar so will be having a go at making one of them over the coming days.
Secondly, I've gotten my hands on some...
I decided to remove it because it essentially kept the stems growing at diagonals which didn't look great. No doubt about it though, the flow certainly helped growth.
I've got a local plastics firm who will do me 2000mm for £13 so i can go collect it. I'm thinking I'd mess up the first one so having a spare length would also be useful :D
I've just gotten hold of some measuring device (caliper i think its called) and the female end of the pipe is 19mm so I'd need 20mm to get over the rubber collar for a watertight seal.
Hi Darrel,
I did think about that but they are a little grey and I'd have to blank off some of the holes in order to get the right output pressure to create the flow. The only thing I could think to do this with was electrical tape. I know i could silicon some but I'd prefer something less...
Hi Guys,
I'm wanting to try a full length spray bar across the back of my tank to deal with a couple of dead spots. Problem is I am using the Eheim installation Set 2 outlet. I want to keep using this as it offers easy maintenance and flexibility in relation to where I run things but I...
Hi all.
I haven't updated this since March but everything has been going OK. My growth issues of the past have gone away and the tank has filled in to the point I have removed a number of the plants because they didn't match what I had in my head. Now I'm comfortable with how things are going...
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about 10% as that actually allows you to see something in the tank. Its not illuminated by any means but it does give an almost moonlight glow.
Hi All,
I've been using my LED fixtures with the TMC Aquaray controller and it allows you to set your effective lights off light value so that you can have them dimmed right down if you wanted to.
Has anyone done this on a planted tank and did it have any adverse effects? I was thinking about...
