    Growing Mosses

I hope Matt doesn't mind but I thought I'd post my own moss experiment here. After getting some spiky a while back in a one-to-grow tropica pot (Ed, you'll correct me if it wasn't Tropica) I thought I'd give it a go. Used some some of those pots with edamame in you get from Pret...

I knew it was them before you named them. The shrimp massacre aside I've never had healthy plants from them. Probably bought 10 plants off them overall and I think only one hasn't melted away (not including the ones I had to chuck away because they killed all my shrimp). I am alarmed they are...

    Fissidens is well hard

Ok, I was wrong. This stuff is not well hard. That doesn't do it justice. It's like the Begbie of the moss world. Turns out I didn't throw it away, I actually put it in an opaque box then put that in a shed. So has been sitting in complete darkness for three weeks. Also, turns out there were...

    Cleaning moss

Have discovered the same about my Fissidens recently - absolutely rank. I wouldn't worry too much about the shrimp, if there's too much dirt they won't be able to tackle all of it. I now use a pipette to squirt the dirt out then hoover it up. BTW I'd check the state of the hoses on your...

    weeping moss or taiwan moss?

Depends on the tree mate  I have used taiwan before and if tied right it will create a beautiful cypress tree effect. Weeping I was not so keen on. Wouldn't attach too well. Peacock also works well for a tree effect.

Remind me of the newish tiny crypt species?

George, currently have both and the green gecko, whilst very beautiful, is growing a lot bigger than the parva. Probably twice the height. But that might be because the parva barely grows

    Thoughts on plant types

Hydrocotyles, pogostemon helferi and small crypts (e.g. parva) can work well too.

Yeah, the flow in mine is good too, have a koralia pointed straight down from top of tank to the carpet. Pretty sure Daniel is right about co2 though. Have been using a (very cheap) inline diffuser the last couple of weeks and the HC has stepped up another gear.

    Plant Choices - Help!

You could try a hydrocotyle as a mid-ground transition. A lot of people like using downoi for that too. Small crypts might also work and possibly staurogyne repens. BTW too much light. Used to have 2xt8s and 2xt5s on my 125l. Turned off the t5s and the tank is doing so much better now.

Gutted. I really love this plant. It grows beautifully in my tank and has exactly the right look (for want of a better word - Jurassic) that I need for background. Dos & Don'ts while using super-glue with mosses

One more tip, that I learnt tonight through a painful lesson. Don't use the applicator type I just suggested underwater. If fills up with water. Now I'll readily admit I wasn't entirely fully clothed doing this. Major tank rescapes being a wet and messy business after all and me wanting to...

Dos & Don'ts while using super-glue with mosses

The other thing is to use glue in a bottle with applicator buttons rather than a tube. E.g. I used this stuff but I'm sure other brands do it too. This makes controlling how much you put on the wood so much easier. Only down side to this with finer mosses like fissidens is that it does coat...

Well I've had a wealth of experience gained on this topic over the weekend. Probably got through a tube and a half of the stuff. Thanks all. I suspect the #1 is an egeria. Partly because of the translucent leaves but also because of the melt. It's the only one of the three falling apart and it's doing it fast and in the same way the egeria I had in this tank did. I don't think it likes excel. Happy to be proved wrong...

Yep, the four leaf is the emersed form. You're doing well if the runners keep coming. This is a very slow grower IME.
